I'm amazed Helen... last time I looked, they were on Ebay.. in fact I bought another! The older silver ones were better because you had an "electronic" programme guide so you could click on the programme to record it. One of my silver ones packed up on the recording side but the other is fine.
Shame about the Recorder R, I'm very pleased with them even without the EPG feature. I have many SD cards full of SOTS & POTPs.... now and then I "rename" the files to read as appropriate...
The best recording run I did was the 50s pop up station... lots of great stuff on there..

Laughing

Gambo irritates me on POTP, so a role reversal might be inspired. They could feature more of the US charts, too.

Just a thought. Let Gambo do SOTS and Tony go back to POTP. Gambo is a music broadcaster, as Brian was, and is wasted on POTP. I'm quite happy for it to be pre-recorded because I don't care about someone driving to Cornwall

I agree and I think this would work well. I would definitely start listening again.

I thought about this but wonder if Gambo is too young? Brian, Tony and I think I'm right in saying all the other presenters of SOTS were actually working in the 60s. Gambo would still have been at high school/college (like us Wink) at that time, not many anecdotes which I think make the programme.

Good point, H. It is about the anecdotes as much, if not more than, the music.

Gambo will be 70 next April, and I think is more than capable of coming up with relevant information and suitable anecdotes about the 60s. Besides, what information do we get from Blackburn? Feeble jokes, constant thanks for all the texts and tweets, how to get in touch, how much he loves this or that record ... while at the same time trampling over the start and finish of every track so that we never ever get to hear all the music that he claims to love so much. Please - any presenter other than Blackburn!

I thought he was 2 years younger. Still his memories will be of the US not the UK where the majority of the listeners are. Don't get me wrong I like Gambo and miss his Saturday evening show. I don't listen to POTP that much just now though.

I only listen to any chart up to 1973 .

Going off topic, here's a little gem. It's Keith Skues and his personal look at Pirate radio. The middle hour features Susan Moore, whose father, Reg Calvert,
along with David Lord Sutch, started Radio Sutch, which then became Radio City. It's a great listen.

...and due to the overwhelming response to last week's show, allow me to enlighten you on this week's offering. The middle hour is dedicated to Apple records. All good stuff.

Does a week ever go by, without TB telling us that Craig Douglas lived next door to him, or that he used to breakfast with Gene Pitney?

Just checked out this morning's playlist and for me it's a really good one so I'll give it a listen later on and maybe record it for a future listen.

Did he mention how dark it was outside? Or that he worked on Caroline? Or that he thinks the sixties had the best music ever? Or that he used to have breakfast with Gene Pitney?

I never listen to it because of the ungodly hour but always check the music played, and yes it was pretty good. You can't go wrong with Hello Goodbye and Daydream Believer.

I love The Cowsills 'The Rain The Park And Other Things'. I was unaware of this song at the time and only heard it when Brian played it a few years ago.

And he didn't play The Supremes for once!

It was a good 'un, H. Last night's NYE special was very good, too. Especially as I had no idea it was on!

Last night's was OK but I do wish TB would be a bit more adventurous and edgy.
Nothing wrong with the Supremes, but every week?

I would stand by that playlist, all day long. It's really good. After 55 years, you must know that he likes pop and soul. To expect him to all of a sudden start to be dangerous and edgy, is surely like asking Katie Boyle to be more like Frankie Boyle?

After all, it does state '2 hours of 60's party anthems'.

Compare it to the next programme, which is a 70's one. Loads more 'edgy' stuff to choose from, but nowhere near as good as TB's choices. Bay City Rollers..Tina Charles...Mud...David Dundas...and a few others. Compared to that lot, The Supremes are the Mothers Of Invention. A missed opportunity.

Just listening to Saturday's now Raver and it's as good as it looked on paper!

I had forgotten about SOTS New Year's Eve until it was already too late so another for iPlayer (sorry can't get used to this 'Sounds' malarky Wink ), but I glanced at the playlist and I agree that it's superb for parties.

That 'Sounds' business is so irritating, H. Some bright sparks have obviously thought it makes them 'cutting edge'.

It's what we called records in the 70's!

'Put some sounds on!' Rolling Eyes

Ken Bruce had a trail for Hugh Bonneville hosting FNIMN. I emails Ken to say how good it was to hear "Ian Fletcher" on the radio and how pleased he must have been to come up with the name "BBC Sounds app" for an app that plays sounds on the BBC. Didn't get read out though

Happy New Year to one ad all..

Listening to Tony yesterday and thought, when he played this, The Beatles ~ She's Leaving Home, that's my track of the day and then he played ..

The Everly Brothers ~ Walk Right Back

Jimmy Ruffin ~ I've Passed This Way Before

The Chiffons ~ One Fine Day

The Rockin’ Berries ~ He's In Town

Four Tops ~ Baby I Need Your Lovin'

...that on any other day could have been my track of the day..Smile

Not in the running but the start of Speedy Gonzales always makes me smile..from the lovely voice of Pat Boone to the plaintive cry ...La La La .. of the young Mexican girl...Laughing

I love Sounds of the Sixties. Cool

(Bit late but Happy New Year to you,Number Six)

Not had a chance to listen yet Becky but what a playlist!

Just back from the US where we had Sirius Radio in the car, one of the stations was 60's on 6 (another was 70s on 7!). No ads and the tracks just kept coming, good presenters and a lot of US covers of tracks we know of by different artists, the Vogues, Gary Lewis and the Playboys and Buckinghams to name but a few. I wish I'd been able to log the playlists!

H

Edited to add that I've just had a look at the complete playlist and heard Classics IV 'Traces' on Sirius last week. I've never known the title of that track but have heard it a lot!

Becky: looking at the playlist for Saturday there were other gems, the wonderful Sitting In The Park, Summer In The City, Groovin'. And many more.

Thank God for SOT60s, though I suspect Bob Shennan will get rid of it soon.

I'm liking the sound of that radio station,Helen.Lots of long roads (?) in America to appreciate it. What part of the US did you go to?

You're right,Schiz, there were other gems on...just picked out some...Helen has mentioned another.

Oh and this is the one I think of first when The Vogues is mentioned..

Heard the track you mentioned by the Vogues last week Becky!

We were in Florida this time, and drove from St Pete Beach near Tampa to Fort Lauderdale, which took us 5 hours. We did a few shorter trips as well so the radio was well used!

Have never heard of St Pete Beach,Helen,or St Pete come to that...unless the Americans cut an R off the end and it's named after him. Wink Laughing

Tony said this morning, after playing one of their songs, that Brian Epstein had said one of his regrets was not signing The Searchers. Last night on BBC 4 John McNally ( guitarist and vocalist with The Searchers) was one of the talking heads on The Beatles: Made on Merseyside (which was excellent) looking really well. I saw The Searchers a couple of years ago and they still (with the help of John) sound really good.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0003lx8

I enjoyed hearing West of the Wall - Toni Fisher this morning..it's years since I've heard that.

Didn't get to hear all of the programme but Tony said he would be playing some Scott Walker so I look forward to picking up on that, when I have the time.
