Becky thanks for the reminder that I hadn't listened or looked at the playlist for SOTS yesterday!

I too Love that Ronettes' track and there are a lot of other favourites so I'll listen back during the week.

I find that every week,Helen. Lots to enjoy. Tony played Waterloo Sunset a couple of records after The Ronettes...another record worthy of Track of the Day but I chose Do I Love You because you don't hear it that often...not knowing (as Schiz said) Tony had played it on Friday. Cool

My track of the day today....the lovely That'll Do by Peter Gabriel. Listened to it with a tear in my eye remembering Terry Wogan, who Ken mentioned before he played it. Terry would have been 80 today.

That’ll Do, written by Randy Newman and originally recorded for the film Babe: Pig in the City, was one of Sir Terry’s favourite songs. In fact, when Sir Terry was a castaway on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs on New Year’s Day 2012 it was That’ll Do that he chose as his favourite song, saying; “It kind of epitomises my attitude, which is that the only thing that really matters in the world is kindness”.

Thanks for that Becky, I'll listen back. I remember that Terry loved the track, he's still sorely missed.

Stevie Wonder's 'Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing' on Steve Wright this afternoon. Not heard in years.

Steve Wright usually has the best playlist and today was no exception. Macca's Another Day and the Bee Gees Morning Of My Life, being the stand outs for me.

Bee Gees

Macca

..and congrats to Paul, for getting his first No 1 US album for 36 years.

I much prefer Steve Wright's show to anything else on R2. At least he plays a few classic oldies. If only he didn't talk over all the songs.

By contrast, Ken Bruce is utterly unlistenable. Too many new songs, all utterly bland.

I've gotten used to it, after a few years of avoiding him, Schiz, apart from the 3 o'clock oldies. But my 11 year old Grandaughter gets quite irritated by him talking over records!

Spot on about Ken's show. Whoever compiles, if that's the right word, the playlist, needs stringing up. It's all so banal and meaningless. It's not even bland! It's beyond all those things. That said, today's was pretty good, from what I can remember. A good set from Sophie Ellis-Bextor and an interesting Tracks of my Years. But I do think, that if it wasn't for the abilities of Mr Bruce, along with loyalty to him, people would leave the station in their millions.

I agree about Ken's playlist being not that good and that is putting it mildly. I realised the other day that I don't listen to Ken that much these days unless I'm driving.

I've said this before but when Ken Phillips was producing it was the best mainstream show on the station - you never knew what you were going to get and new music and artists would get a chance. Then Gary Bones was brought in with the specific remit of making the music more homogenised and bland, and that's what happened. Ratings have gone up, but it feels like a waste of Mr Bruce's talents.

My track for today has to be Gilbert Becaud's 'A Little Love And Understanding' on Gaby Roslin this evening. I can't remember when I last heard it.

Today's track for me so far is Gordon Haskell's 'How Wonderful You Are' (Harry's Bar) heard just now on Steve Wright's oldies. I remember JW playing it so much on his Drivetime days at the time of it's release. Haven't heard it literally in years.

H

PS Steve hadn't heard in years either and added it was a Christmas hit in 2001

Listening again, earlier,to Bruno Tonioli this is my track of the day today - the sublime Nuns' Chorus sung by Joan Sutherland. A strong contender for one of my desert island discs. Cool

It was good to hear Ken play Reflections Of My Life, in memory of Dean Ford, singer with Marmalade. One of the best songs of the 60's, for me. Really sad to hear of his passing yesterday.

This is a link to a 2014 version that Dean recorded. Watching and listening to it yesterday, I had something in my eye. It's a beautiful video and so poignant.

Only heard of his death this morning Raver, and I missed Ken's show yesterday. I always loved that song though. A sad loss.

I only found out from someone who writes for Mojo, on Twitter, H. It's a shock when you find out unexpectedly like that. I don't think the news was out until Dean's daughter posted the news on his Facebook account yesterday afternoon.

Only caught Ken's little tribute by accident, earlier this morning.

For me today, it has to be 'Sabre Dance' by Love Sculpture, which was on Pick Of The Pops. I remember loving it as a child and being really impressed at the manic guitar playing when it was featured on Top Of The Pops. I still love it now.

And the guitar work on another hit Race With The Devil by Gun was fairly impressive too!

I bought that single as a 13 year old. Still marvel at Dave Edmunds' playing on it.

Barbara Dickson is picking the tracks of her years on Ken Bruce this week. One of todays choices was Little Feat 'Rock 'n' Roll Doctor'. Certainly the best track I've heard today.

Can't beat the Feat! I liked her other choice as well. Never heard it before.

James Taylor - Frozen Man. Love his guitar style.

Today's track for me is Some Velvet Morning by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood on Liza's show just now.

Can't remember when I last heard it!

Ken's playing Smoke On The Water. Someone must have hidden the Billy Joel and the Meat Loaf!

There's a revolution at the Beeb...

Some Velvet Morning is indeed a lovely song and the sort of song that is never played today on cheesy 80s obsessed Radio 2.

I like listening to Lisa, even though she is totally eccentric.

Track of the day: Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez, played on Steve Wright.

I was only aware of this fine song about 15 years ago when it was chosen by the Coldplay singer on tracks of my years.

Radio 2 does have its uses occasionally.

One of my very favourite songs ever. Goosebumps every time.

And talking of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, Tom Robinson played this yesterday, on 6. I've never heard it on the radio before.

I heard some of this evening's Drivetime in the background and Sara was talking to someone, it sounded like it might have been about the first live gig they went to. Anyway they got to pick a track and this man picked 'Wonderous Stories' by Yes. Great to hear something from their earlier more Prog era instead of the usual 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart'.

I heard that too Becky! A good few tracks in that top 10.

My track so far has to be Young Gifted and Black.

That came on straight after Pickettywitch,Helen, didn't it...a bit of a toss up..

Listened (a good while back) to a programme about Lorraine Hansberry. Nina Simone composed 'To Be Young, Gifted and Black' in her honour.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00scjx2

He played a Kenny Roger's record...Something's Burning...I only remember the bit of the song where he sings those words.... Very Happy ... obviously didn't impress me much at the time.. Wink

That would have been my record of the day too. I will have to listen again as I was out riding on a bus of my childhood today!
I'll add 'Games People Play' by Alan Parsons Project to that as I didn't hear that on Graham Norton for the same reason!!
A couple more goodies: Who Do You Love' by Juicy Lucy on Pick Of The Pops and 'Keep Searching' by Del Shannon on Sounds Of The 60s
Perhaps I should ride on vintage buses more often!!

I too love The Same Old Feeling. 'The cottage where we used to play is overgrown now'. Perfect pop.

Also love YG and B, and Andy Williams' Can't Help Falling In Love.
Then there were two all time classics: Let It Be and Bridge Over Troubled Water.

It was a member's trip that the bus club put on each year which, for once, co-incided with my day off work. We went down to Midhurst.
It's great to hear alternative tracks by artists. All but one of my choices are tracks that I thought are as good as their biggest hits ('Ruby, Dont Take Your Love To Town' in the case of Kenny Rogers) but are sadly ignored by radio stations.
