I agree Eileen, I rarely listen to that slot when he isn't on. It was pure chance I found out about his return as I'd not heard a trailer.

Loved hearing Gordon MacRae singing the soliloquy from Carousel on Don's programme....Barry Cryer's favourite song, apparently.

I guessed which actor Don was talking about as soon as he mentioned "beautiful, thick, prematurely grey hair. Very Happy

I've heard Unchained Melody enough times to see me through but I was compelled to stop and to listen to the version by Al Hibbler that was played on the programme...nice. I have heard the name,Al Hibbler, but that's about as far as it goes. Will have to look him up.

Sadly tonight's show is the last of the present series. Hope he will be back later in the year.

Good news for Don Black fans he is back starting next Sunday.

I tuned in to the last half hour of Moira's show last night and it was good all Frank Sinatra so I think I'll listen back to the first half.

Just a heads up that Don's first show in his latest series was last Sunday.

Love the version of Nevertheless (I'm In Love With You) by Harry Nilsson that Don has just played.

And now he's playing another great favourite of mine...Louis Armstrong - Give Me A Kiss To Build a Dream On...

A lovely way to wind down on a Sunday evening. Smile

Ditto both of those, Becky Smile. I have the LP recorded by Harry Nilsson which contains that song and it is sheer delight throughout.

Is that from A Little Schmilson in the Night? I think we have it somewhere!

I'll have to listen back to this week's edition.

I have it too! A friend did a copy of it for me.As you said,Eileen, it's a sheer delight throughout.

The playlist doesn't have it on as being played...there are a couple of others missing,too....someone's not doing their job properly!

I used to have it nearly thirty years ago but it was lost and I gradually forgot about it. Can't think why but it came to mind last year and lo and behold, it appeared under the Christmas tree

Don is back tonight with the first of his new series. Looking forward to it!

Enjoyed the trails I've heard during the last week but this was really quite spooky. In the trail Don samples Ella's 'Everytime We Say Goodbye' with a reference to Cole Porter.

Then Friday evening I'm starting the long task of sorting my late father's music collection at his house. I pick up a pile of 10 or so EPs, on the top of the pile is one of Ella Fitzgerald containing the very song 'Everytime We Say Goodbye'......... I've brought it home with me.

That is quite a task for you, Helen. It seems that your dad had good taste!

It was great to have Don Black back again. I thought this first programme last night was outstanding with so many of my favourite singers including Matt Monro, Chet Baker, Nat King Cole, Fred Astaire. Wonderful way to finish the weekend.

I listened again to one of Don's programmes this morning and at the outset he said it would be one of songs that had been nominated for an Oscar but had missed out..

There followed a selection of classic songs...great idea for a programme.

Loved it!

I think that was last week's show Becky? I listened live and then recorded it from iPlayer as the songs were all so good. The anecdotes help make the show as well for me.

I think you're right,Helen, about it being last week's show. And yes, the anecdotes make for entertaining listening..much more so than hearing what listeners are having for tea etc... Rolling Eyes

Don is back tonight at 11 o'clock. I've not heard any trails but I've not listened to R2 much this week.

The new series began last week (6th Jan) and it was a good one.

Episode 2 is all duets and some really good ones that I hadn't heard in a long time.

I decided to record it on the SkyBox having had to re learn how to do radio recordings as it's so long since I used that function. It's a bit like setting an old fashioned VCR but I've set it for every week. Must admit it's made good listening while I had lunch today.

I thought I would just catch up with Jools in Don's slot, since Moira left.

I like Jools but "Our Kind of Music" this ain't. Poor old David must be spinning in his grave.

I was a bit disappointed when I saw who was doing Moira's old slot. Not had the chance to check it out yet though.

As far as I could tell it was no different to his weekday slot. Good in its own way but not what I would want to "end my weekend with". And, as seems to be the case with most shows, "Tonight I'll be chatting with ……"

I always feel that I "should" enjoy Jools Holland - but I don't!

Dear David Jacobs was always my absolute favourite for last thing on Sunday nights but I do like Don Black and his choices and his stories of times he has spent with various people in the song-writing business. Moira can be mostly OK too.

I feel the same Eileen about Jools Holland!

Don't know if anyone heard Ed Balls sitting in for Elaine Paige this afternoon? I was pleasantly surprised and some of his music would make good late night listening in Moira's slot.

I've really enjoyed Don Black's last series. I hit on the idea of recording them on the Sky Box and have listened to them during the day.

I'll give The Balls a listen, H. I've quite enjoyed Elaine Paige, of late.

Had no idea that Jools Holland was on Sunday nights. That's not good scheduling, is it? I usually listen to Keith Skues, once MOTD 2 has finished. Sunday's used to be so rich in quality programmes...mind you, I'm probably talking about 10 years ago or more. Apart from JW and maybe a little Clare Teal while washing up, I don't bother.

What a great programme the other night from Don.

"Tonight he pays tribute to your favourite singers and the songs you love the most"

So many favourites of mine were included

Jimmy Durante - Young At Heart. Robert Goulet - If Ever I Would Leave You and my most favourite, Robert Preston with I Won't Send Roses. How I love that song, but it must be sung by Robert.

A programme to keep. Cool

Oh how I agree! Nobody sings it like Robert Preston. I saw the production of Mack & Mabel at Chichester a few years ago and have to say that Michael Ball was utterly wonderful as Mack Sennett.

Just listened to last night's delightful programme

Don's first successful song, Matt Monro ~ Walk Away, that changed his life, just happens to be a big favourite of mine.

And Glen Campbell singing Yesterday, When I Was Young - beautiful - I love his voice. Cool

Am a bit behind with my listening to Don's shows this series. Just caught up with the first that I thankfully recorded on the Sky Box as I did my dusting..... the hour just flew by.

The series has now ended BUT they are repeating previous ones in this time slot. It doesn't say which year they will start with, but no doubt they will say at the beginning that it was first aired in '20 whatever'.

Good to hear some worthwhile repeats I hope!

H

PS Have done a bit of sleuthing around as they are showing the playlist for tonight's show ahead of its broadcast. All playlists of Don's previous shows are available to view on the website and it looks as if they are starting the repeats with the episode from 06 Jan 2019 which I already have recorded. I wrote in the comments 'a good one'!

Anyway it will be good to hear them again, I was hoping for some older ones so maybe they will mix them up? I hope so!

Well, I'm glad they are repeating old shows, otherwise I wouldn't have heard last night's beauty on Johnny Mercer!

Don was on Michael Ball's show this morning...incidentally, Michael has done a great job these past weeks.

He (Don) was struck by the virus and was in hospital for three weeks. His real name is Donald Blackstock and that was the name he was checked in as. One day, one of the nurses asked him what he did for a living. He replied that he was a songwriter and to google 'Don Black'. He heard nothing more, until the day he was ready to go home. All of the nurses sang Born Free to him.

I tell you now, I was in floods of tears! It's an emotional time...and Don has recovered very well and a new series is due in a few weeks.
