Xfm drivetime presenter Richard Bacon will leave the London station at the end of this month, and has bagged a new show on BBC Radio Five Live.

Bacon has hosted the drivetime show on the GCap station since August last year, following a stint presenting the same slot on sister station, Capital Radio.

The former Blue Peter presenter, who currently hosts BBC3's Castaway spin-off, Castaway Exposed, said he had decided to leave Xfm at the end of his current contract to explore other opportunities.

His new show on Five Live - a 10-part current affairs panel show, Fighting Talk: Any Other Business - will air on Sunday nights, beginning on April 1.

The Saturday morning strand Fighting Talk has been running on Radio Five since 2003. Both shows are made by World's End Productions.

"I want to do different types of presenting and take on different jobs," Bacon said.

"It was a difficult decision to leave Xfm because I love working there, it is the best job I have ever had. They have always given me the freedom to muck around and indulge my sense of humour.

"I very much like the idea of speech radio. I have done it before and it does appeal to me."

Of his stint at Capital Radio, Bacon added: "Capital wasn't quite right for me and I wasn't quite right for it. I managed to persuade Xfm to let me do drivetime there. They have been great at accommodating me."

Bacon joined Capital in May 2005, replacing Neil Fox in the drivetime slot, after a stint as a DJ on Xfm. He returned to Xfm 15 months later.

The Xfm programme director, Adam Uytman, said: "Richard has decided to pursue other projects. We're sad to see him go but in the four years that he's been here, he's made some great radio and we wish him all the luck in the future."

There is enough ham on Radio 2 in the shape of Mitchell, Dutta & Allinson without bringing Bacon on board as well.

PS. O'Leary is the turkey of the station.

I hate Richard Bacon. No wonder he likes speech radio - he's such a fan of his own voice. Pity he's got nothing worth saying.
