Yesterday's song of the day for me was Twist and Shout from the Beatles on Claudia Winkleman's show. I think it was the choice of her guest author Caitlin Moran.

It really is ages since I heard the track and of course it still has Beatles' memories for me!

Did you know Ringo was 79 yesterday,Helen. Doesn't seem possible, but it is.
Very Happy

Edit
Am listening to Tony's programme from last Friday - the fifties special - and he's playing Dance With Me by The Drifters...love,love it! My track for today.

Gosh yes he would be, now you mention the date! It's frightening.

We listened to Tony live on Friday and it was a great show. Someone texted in to say 'I wasn't going to bother listening to this week's show as I wasn't around then but so glad I changed my mind'........ loads you could say to that comment eh!

Indeed!
Tony made a mistake in his programme saying Rosemary Clooney was George Clooney's mum. She was his aunt.

Please don't laugh but when I heard Steve Wright play a bit of the Robin Hood theme a smile lit up my face!

I've probably mentioned before that I once checked in Richard Greene on a flight and I didn't recognise him until one of the porters/baggage handlers told me. I looked down at the ticket that he had given me and of course the name said it all!

My favourite story about Robin Hood music was a couple's wedding day at about the time Bryan Adams had his massive No1 hit from Robin Hood - Prince Of Thieves. The couple obviously hoped for 'Everything I do', but apparently asked for that theme from the 'Robin Hood' film and got 'Robin Hood, Robin Hood, Riding Through The Glen'. If I had been a guest at that wedding, I don't think I'd have been able to stop myself from laughing!

Listening to Jeremy Vine and Supertramp came on with Give A Little Bit. Love the overall sound of Supertramp especially the lead vocal. I always thought they were an American group ...must have been from Breakfast In America.

Well that's my excuse.. Laughing

Catching up with Tony's programme from yesterday and playing now is the You Don't Know Me by Ray Charles. Such a sad song sung beautifully by Ray. Cool

Had I heard Huey Morgan's show last Saturday, I'd have chosen the Supertramp track that he played, according to the playlist page, which was 'School'. Very rarely heard on the radio. The only other time I can remember hearing it is when Stuart Maconie played it when deputising for Johnnie Walker sometime in the mid 2000s.

It was a good POTP today (first hour at least) wasn't it! Lots of memories of the time for me as I heard the tracks.

I'm sure we've posted since the date of my last post here????

Anyway a few days late but I came in from the garden last Saturday just after 6 and switched on Liza Tarbuck to find the Beatles 'From Me To You' playing. I promptly ramped up the volume, left the back door open and broadcast it to the rest my neighbours!

It felt good and I can't recall the last time I heard it!

The original mk1 bluesy Fleetwood Mac. Such a shame that first stage of their career is so criminally ignored in favour of the later Rumours stage.

My Track of the Day today - Show Me The Way by Peter Frampton.

A record, when I hear it, I want to hear again, straightaway!

It was on POTP - and the year was 1976.

An enjoyable programme, overall, with some great records.

Just reading this thread and Liza is playing Magic Moments - Perry Como. My parents had it on a 78 back in the day so it's my track of the day.

Magic Moments is such a lovely record,Helen.

A little tale attached to my Track of the Day (Yesterday has Gone by Cupid's Inspiration) today. It was on POTP. I never knew up until today that it was a cover of a record by Anthony and The Imperials. I went off to Youtube to have a listen. A little to my surprise I much preferred the version by Cupid's Inspiration -I say that because, for me American versions of songs, in the early sixties, had more oomph than British versions.

Anyway I looked on social media and found Terry Rice-Milton the lead vocal of Cupid's Inspiration and told him.

To my surprise he answered saying - "So pleased to hear that you think that, you've made my day, many thanks! As it happens I was introduced to Little Anthony and the Imperials at a venue in Swiss Cottage, London and one of them said - 'so you're the lucky B.....d who had the Hit with Yesterday Has Gone!'! I had to laugh! Their's was a completely different treatment anyway! Tx"

I listened to most of POTP today (a nice escape from today's realities) from all of the years and there were so many excellent tracks.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Lovely story Becky!

I've got a trio of Track of the Day today, a threesome that Liza T has just played:-

Blue Bayou - Roy Orbison
Close To You - Carpenters
Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay - Otis Reading.

Was going to post about Blue Bayou as it took me back to summer 1963 my intro to 'pop music', then the other two followed so including them.

All three are true greats, H. I seem to remember Mean Woman Blues was the B-side of Blue Bayou, but I could be wrong. I often wonder what sort of songs Karen Carpenter would be singing if she was still alive. So sad. Same goes for the great Otis. He had enough life in him for three people.

At the moment, I'm back in 1967, courtesy of POTP from 2 weeks ago. It feels almost as comforting as a hug from your mum, in this hugless age we're living in right now.

PS What a singer T Rice Milton that's what TB used to call him at the time) was and what a single Yesterday Has Gone was. Didn't know myself that it wasn't an original until a few years back. I'm sure I posted it here somewhere. One of those rare gems that surpassed the original. And there aren't that many!

It's funny how a record can take you back instantly, to a place and time. Scott McKenzie's San Francisco is playing now. Written by John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas, who I believe made one of the greatest covers - of Dedicated To The One I Love. Anyway, the San Francisco reminds me of being with my Mum in a Green Shield stamp shop in Lewisham. While she was getting something with her books of stamps, I was looking in the glass cabinets to see what was on offer, and Scott's LP of the same name was there. I longingly gazed at it for what seemed like ages. I think we probably came away with a Pifco hairdryer or something, which I have to admit, was a little more useful than the album , though my 12 year old self would have had none of it. Happy days!

Could have picked a few from Elaine's programme today for my Track of the Day but I'll plump for the stirring Tell Me It's Not True by Barbara Dickson. Cool

Barbara was one of the celebrities in the last series of The Real Marigold Hotel.

Came over as a nice down to earth person.

Mine is an instrumental that was included in tonight's Sunday Night is Music Night.

Duane Eddy's 'Because They're Young'. It always reminds me of Johnnie Walker and Ken Bruce commented that it was known as his 'Drive Time 'theme.

I haven't listened to much radio today so there could have been others but this has to be mine. Liza Tarbuck just played El Condor Pasa by Simon and Garfunkel of course and both O/H and I said it's been years since either of us had heard it.

If I'd ever been asked what that was called in a quiz,Helen,I wouldn't have come up with that so thanks for educating me on that one.
Looking on Youtube I see in brackets it's called, in English, If I Could which is more familiar to me.

Haven't listened to any music this morning so I'm cheating a little and choosing my track of the day from yesterday's SOTS - It Might As Well Rain Until September by Carole King. I have always loved this song and hearing the first chords always has me reaching to turn the volume up! Hope it's a favourite with the neighbours too. Very Happy

I know for sure one of their favourites is Africa by Toto. Wink

Becky I'm the same about Might As Well Rain Until September!

Again I haven't heard much radio today and today's track is once again from Liza Tarbuck, and is Winter Hymnal from Fleet Foxes, circa 2013 she has just said. Time flies..........

A Pedant Writes:

I'm afraid Liza Tarbuck is way out with her claim that Fleet Foxes White Winter Hymnal is circa 2013. I saw Fleet Foxes supporting Elbow, who were chosen to play by Massive Attack, who were in turn curating the Meltdown, at the Royal Festival Hall, back in the summer of 2008. Elbow were just about to take off big time, with the release of The Seldom Seen Kid. I knew the Fleet Foxes music fairly well, and a brilliant evening was had, all for the princely sum of £20!

Raver after I wrote the date I had a feeling I'd heard it earlier too but couldn't think back. I guess it was on Drivetime so sometime in Simon Mayo's residency?

I can't say that I remember R2 playing it, H. It's too long ago, but they must have done. I've no idea of the schedule back then. I think my awareness of Fleet Foxes and certainly Elbow, came about from Jezza's, starting with the Leaders Of The Free World album, which was the one before Seldom Seen Kid. So I would hazard a guess that Fleet Foxes may have been as well. I can remember someone saying that the harmonies reminded them of Crosby Stills and Nash. I didn't think so and still don't.

I also saw Fleet Foxes at Hyde Park on the bill which I think, Neil Young was headlining. Some drunken Irishman was singing? along with them and so out of tune that he was completely ruining it for everyone near him. I had to tell him to shut up! Luckily, there were so many people there, that he didn't know who it was, but it had the desired effect!

Yes I do Raver. I also remember seeing her in cabaret at the Grosvenor House hotel in the early 90s I'd guess, at an annual air cargo club dinner and dance we attended almost every year back then. She was very good. It was in that huge ballroom with those enormous chandeliers where they used to do the award ceremonies from. The grand swirling stair case made you feel a million dollars as you descended to your table for the evening!

Helen of Troy, surely! Sounds like a wonderful thing to look forward to every year, H.

Most of the hotels in Park Lane were (might still be) booked for that sort of thing, weren't they? Not sure about the Hilton, but certainly The Dorchester.

The ex-missus used to have her Christmas party there, before she met me. M&S. I myself managed to buy a hotel in Park Lane, as I recall. Loved a game of Monopoly.

The same ex-missus put her back out while playing Monopoly with me, her brother and his wife. True story!

It sure was Raver, always the last Saturday in January and we took the train down. All the major international airlines were there and the raffle prizes often included long haul flight tickets. We never won them but a colleague of O/H's did!

We saw some good acts there over the years as well. Went to Hilton once with my Dad as a teenager for dinner (went up in the lift with Michael Aspel!) but never the Dorchester.

Gosh putting her back out playing Monopoly! Must have been awfully painful.

You shared the lift with Ask! I am genuinely impressed, H. I've always been a fan of Michael, all the way back, from when he was a newsreader. He had a great sense of humour. I even bought his autobiography 'Polly Wants A Zebra'. I must have been 19 or 20 when I bought it.

I don't suppose you had access to Capital Radio, when it was first aired. I've just had to Google when it was. January 1973! Kenny and Cash did the breakfast programme, as they did on the pirate ships and Michael followed, complete with his jingle made by Kenny.

That was the end of Radio 1 for me, by and large. Such a great little station for a few years.

My youngest daughter was BA Cabin Crew for a couple of years, until she was expecting her first baby. After a year or so, she went back to retrain, but on the way to Heathrow one morning, had a terrible car crash and was lucky to get out alive. As it was, she spent three months in hospital with a broken pelvis. But she loved working at BA. Now, she's a teacher, which isn't for the faint hearted, these days, to put it mildly.
