It will be interesting to see whether squeezing someone's boob requires that you are expunged from history.

Knowing the BBC, crap judgement will prevail.

Don't always catch these programmes but I watched the one from last Saturday night and thought it was a cracking edition!

Sad Cafe were on and I thought I'd look them up to see how they were going on only to find their singer, Paul Young, had died in 2003 from heart problems....he was just 53 years of age....Crying or Very sad

Yes.

(although that article also says Gary Glitter has been removed from the repeats, which we know is not true)

One of the best tracks to be featured on Top Of The Pops. In the edition of 11/10/79, The Headboys 'Shape Of Things To Come': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZlH5IQMTsE

We appear to be at the end of May now. Anyone know what is happening. Is it that we are missing out the shows with problem DJs or is BBC4 going to take over from BBC3 when we have the summer of sport.

I know the plan is to run 2 per week for the foreseeable future, but it's not been clear why - either it's cheap filler or, as you say, Summer will be full of sport, sitcoms and Proms.

It's very odd, isn't it?
We were commenting on exactly the same thing earlier this week..... at this rate we'll be doing the Christmas records some time in mid Summer!

We stack up recordings on our Tivo box, so we can choose to watch them pretty much in time with the natural passage of the year.

Dear BBC,
Thought you might like to know: Your arse is something you will find at the bottom of your back, whereas your elbow is something you will find half-way up your arm.
I hope you find this information useful.
Kind regards, etc.

It wouldn't be the first time they have shown a 'Christmas special' edition of a show (not thinking specifically of Top Of The Pops here) in the middle of summer!

More inconsistency this week. While they miss out DLT episodes they still include Bill Wyman's solo record (which should be banned for crimes against music, never mind the sex with a 13-year-old girl!)

It's no good, I just have to ask. Why did they not show the 4/11/82 edition? It wasn't presented by any of the 'persona-non-gratas'. Here is the running order according to: http://z6.invisionfree.com/popscene/ar/t1185.htm

4-11-82: Presenter: Mike Smith

(42) WHAM! Young Guns (Go For It)
(28 DIANA ROSS Muscles (video)
(37) BLANCMANGE Living On The Ceiling
(30) JOHN COUGAR Jack And Diane (video)
(10) SHAKIN STEVENS Ill Be Satisfied (video)
(20) DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES Maneater WATCH
(22) THE PIRANHAS feat. BORING BOB GROVER Zambezi
(11) KOOL & THE GANG Ooh La La La (Lets Go Dancin) (danced to by Zoo)
(1) CULTURE CLUB Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?
(24) SHARON REDD Never Give You Up (video) (crowd dancing)

I would be really interested to know why the above show was deemed to be unbroadcastable. Any ideas?

Yes, it was Radio 1 Anniversary episode - which meant all the old presenters came on and said hello. One of the songs features them all dancing together, so you've got Bates, Wright, Jensen, Peel alongside Savile, DLT, Jonathan King, and others. It's actually quite extraordinary. I'll see if I can dig it out on YouTube later.

No, I'm wrong - turns out Mike Smith didn't want his episodes repeated and wouldn't sign an agreement. The BBC are respecting his wishes even though he's dead. Seems a shame.

Anyway, the Radio 1 episode was actually late September and here's the clip:

If that's true then it's more than a shame - I would say it's just plain wrong...... If you present a show that becomes part of our social history, then you should not have a right (on some whim, presumably) to prevent it being shown in future.
This is like some news presenter saying that we are not allowed to see an old (but significant) news item from the past - it's too silly for words.

I'd say the presenters have too much power if that is the reason it wasn't shown.

I agree - but it's true, sadly!

I think all these 'bans' are unfair on performers (especially the one-hit-wonders), and on viewers who usually only get to see the 'credible' clips.

I sometimes wonder if they couldn't somehow edit the banned shows to find some way of showing JUST the performances without the links from presenters - TOTP2 executes this approach pretty well, with voiceovers from Mark Radcliffe (and Steve Wright on older ones).
It would mean we got much better continuity in the re-runs, and would be less harsh on those one-hit wonders who find their 15 minutes of fame banned!

I tend to agree Uncle but my natural instinct is to want to see all of these shows 'warts and all'

Ok there might have been some presenters along the way who have had problems of various kinds but the fact remains that they were part of musical history and you can't expunge that from human minds and memories even if you do try to do so from the actual repeated shows

I think that perhaps Mr Savile might be in a category of his own - and incidentally one of his own making - but as for the rest of them - is it really worth ruining the public enjoyment of what was and still is an iconic piece of history for the sake of an unfortunate dose of liberal political correctness Sad

I agree Ruddles. I don't want some sanctimonious employee of Auntie Beeb telling me what I shouldn't watch. In fact I have no qualms about seeing Savile introducing a TOTP or Jim'll Fix It. The BBC did after all employ him for 50 years.

The reason they don't show the Savile/DLT episodes and just cut out the presenters is in case any of the audience were abused that night, or if someone watching remembers being there and something happened. Which is ridiculous, as later episodes often feature clips from previous weeks and they don't cut those. It's a policy that's not been thought through.

You're dead right Ian

As far as I am aware DLT was never accused of and certainly never convicted of molesting anyone at TOTP

His only conviction was for groping some woman who was over the age of 30 for about ten seconds more than 40 years ago and not anywhere near the set of TOTP so it would be an absolute miracle if anyone watching the show recalled anything untoward

There may of course be ways of accessing these missing episodes through modern on line methods - something which I am currently looking into Smile

He groped 23-year-old comedian Lucy Porter's breasts while she was a researcher on The Mrs Merton Show in 1995 at BBC Manchester. Yeah, he shouldn't have done it but it shouldn't be lumped in with Savile's crimes.

Dragging this thread up again as last night's TOTP repeat was the debut of a certain Tim Smith. Nowadays best-known as Steve Wright's sidekick he'd just started on Radio 1 at the time but I have no memory of him at all. He doesn't say much!

Well, a few weeks ago, quite possibly we are now talking in months, the last of the 1989 Top Of The Pops episodes was shown on BBC 4 with that year's Christmas episode, which I passed up, not really wanting to look at tinsel & Christmas trees in the middle of summer! I have a question. Why have we still not seen any of the 1990s shows shown on BBC 4? I was certainly looking forward to revisiting the 1990s. Is it going to happen? Please someone tell me it is.

The TOTP repeats always take a break during the Proms and I heard both The Story of 1990 and The Story of 1991 documentaries have been made but delayed slightly due to coronavirus. So I'm hoping the repeats will resume in the next couple of weeks.

According to I-player tonight's editions are from 23/5/1991 & 6/6/1991. Why did they skip the 30/5/1991 edition?

Something to do with rights issues around The Doors, who feature over the end credits.

Thanks for that Ian. Just watched it. No mention that it was Anthea Turner's last show though, except in the comments underneath.

Does anyone know if / when the 'proper' editions of Top Of The Pops will resume on BBC 4? All we have been getting these past few weeks are compilation ' Best of' editions.
