Yes, Substitute is a classic with amazing lyrics. It was first a hit in 1966 but re-released ten years later for some reason.

I always thought 1976 was a dreadful year for music but there were a couple of goodies: Bonnie Tyler and Lost In France, and Yvonne Elliman's Love Me.

Me too. Late 1976 and early 1977 were particularly bad IMHO. Thank heavens punk rock came along and brought some excitement back to the charts later on in '77.

A great chart in the first hour, January 1963. Must have been the time I just started to notice the songs on the radio! Most I can still sing almost word for word........ especially Susan Maughan's Bobby's Girl which everyone in the NE loved.

Telstar followed by Globetrotter made a nice segway and there were several instrumentals.

Enjoyed Gambo's programme today. I like that you hear some records that aren't played that often,as with Baby Can I Take You Home by The Animals and Hubble Bubble Toil and Trouble by Manfred Mann. More familiar ones - Tell Me When by The Applejacks had me having a dance round,and the wonderful Hollies with Just One Look. I watched a belting documentary about them on Sky Arts the other Saturday night.

I loved Tell Me When and Just One Look Becky! They came on just as I got into the car to go shopping, so I whacked up the volume on the car and it was literally blasting out! I didn't care though as it lifted my spirits.

For some reason I have a feeling that I bought 'Tell Me When' with money I was given instead of an Easter egg probably from grandparents. It obviously was very popular around what would probably have been Easter that year.

I keep meaning to record that documentary on Sky Arts as I've noticed it before. I discovered that I worked and often socialised with the ex wife of the original drummer, Don Rathbone. She worked for a different airline to me and it was several years afterwards that someone else told me of the connection!

I agree with Becky, the Hollies documentary on sky arts is great, so much detail and lots of input from the band not just assorted talking heads offering their views years later.

If I had to name hits from Engelbert Humperdinck not sure I'm A Better Man (For Having Loved You) would spring to mind. Paul played it on his programme on Saturday and what a lovely song it is. Had a look on Wiki to see who wrote it and lo and behold it is a Bacharach /David song.

1969 chart. Good one!
