Bad news for fans of internet radio.

The Copyright Royalty Board, a US body, has ruled that royalties should rise from .08 cents per track to .19 cents by 2010.
The figures seem small but these increased payments could kill-off most stations. The UK authorities may follow suit. Crying or Very sad

It will kill off all the small independents, so that only the big radio groups will be able to broadcast over the net. If the royalties authorities got their way they would have killed off every technological advance that was ever made. They are so short sighted and cant ever see beyond the status quo.

GF,
What was a competitive market, that allowed for some originality, will be strangled in the grip of the big corporations just like everything seems to be nowadays... I completely agree with you.

It's a sad day for broadcasting.... It's not like any of these little, independent stations pose any serious threat to the big boys- It seems like an exercise in power-wielding IMO.

There are non PPL records to play.
When i worked in ILR in the 80's there was a list on the wall of songs which were non PPL.
Regarding Internet radio i listen to a few of these.
It would be sad if higher charges meant they had to go.

Feels a bit like that scene from Monty Python & The Holy Grail....

"Help, help, I'm being repressed!"

BFBS should be ok, I think this is funded in some way, in some part by the Government.

Can anyone confirm this?

BFBS is funded entirely by the MoD, IIRC.
