Sometime around Christmas, the Talking Pictures TV channel has the following entry in their schedules (no date yet):
"There’s more music in An Evening with Matt Monro, a film which lay undiscovered in the Monro family garage for decades!"
I will keep an eye out for it and put the date when I know it. |

It is a great channel, isn't it? I have caught all kinds of films, some of which I have never heard of but have thoroughly enjoyed. |

Yeah, I do enjoy Talking Pictures and in lockdown I caught some more obscure films I'd never have watched otherwise and mostly enjoyed them. I was supposed to go their convention at Stockport Plaza in October, but it's been postponed.
There's a lovely short film on there occasionally about music hall in 1960s London, which I'm sure would appeal to many on here. |

I follow Talking Pictures on Twitter,Ian - they do a little quiz most days.
JUST FOR FUN - Here's today's "STAR EYES" puzzle.
Can you tell who the star is just by a close-up of their eyes?
https://twitter.com/TalkingPicsTV/status/1336241614113665026
I haven't a clue whose eyes they are today - I sometimes get it right.
I kept missing a favourite film of mine on there but eventually got it!
The Family Way with John Mills, Hayley Mills and Hywel Bennett - I just love it! |

Me too. Earlier in the week, I watched a 1953 film called The Large Rope, only because I saw that Vanda Godsell was in it. The budget must have been a few hundred quid at the most, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yesterday I watched a documentary on Leslie Howard, which was very interesting.

I don't get to watch a lot of films but I do enjoy the old 60s TV crime dramas that they show. Gideon's Way with John Gregson was particularly gritty. The also show remastered episodes of No Hiding Place and are currently show a real curio, The Mind of Mr J.G. Reeder which I would have thought would have been lost for ever. _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

I remember that we loved Gideon's Way in our house. I was too young to know John Gregson as a film actor at that time. I haven't managed to watch any of them as yet. I did watch one ep of No Hiding Place, which was also a don't miss, back in the day and thought it aged pretty well. It was one of the later series, with Johnny Briggs in it. I'd have watched more, but I think they show it at 4.30 these days, so I forget to watch them. Must do better! _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Thank God for recording.
I used to love No Hiding Place as a boy and that theme tune is still a corker. _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

I love the No Hiding Place theme as well, Six. Sadly, my Humax recorder, which allows 300 hours, is chock full of music related documentaries, films and some factual series. Even worse, now Sky Arts is on Freeview. But I will try and record some when I spot it on the TV Guide online. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

I enjoyed watching Scotland Yard introduced by Edgar Lustgarten.
It was on series link but haven't seen any for a while so I'm assuming it's finished it's run - for now?
I also liked spotting actors, in their younger days, in this. |

Here is the info from the Talking Pictures website:
An Evening with Matt Monro on Christmas Eve (Thursday) at 4.25pm. The only known film of Britain’s greatest singer performing live was found in the Monro family garage after lying there for forty years! See the great man at his peak, performing some of his best-loved songs
Oops, you beat me to it, Raver |

I have checked the recording which seems to have worked thank goodness as sometimes Talking Pictures TV gets a lot of interference. I haven't watched the whole programme yet. |

I watched the recording today. He has such a lovely voice and I would have been happier just to hear him sing and leave out his attempts at jokiness with the audience which (for me) doesn't really work. |

I've noticed before he doesn't quite pull off the humour. Did he do his Patrick Whymark impression? _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

He certainly mentioned Patrick Wymark and possibly did an impression but no one in the audience had ever heard of him - so another lead balloon. |

I'm sure I saw him do that in another concert which fell flat. You think he would have learned. (Actually his impression of Patrick Whymark was pretty good)
If he was still with us you would like to think his advisors would tell him to stick to singing. _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

I caught the second half of this. I did think that maybe the 'jokes' were the sort of thing he'd share with his mates at the bus depot, but yesterday, a post from some lovely old fella on FB whose morning posts I love to read, casually mentioned that Matt used to sing with the Cyril Stapleton Orchestra, which I certainly didn't know. The venue felt more like a working man's club to be, so maybe he tailored that to what he thought would suit his audience. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Found this a few hours ago. I've watched about 30 mins so far. It's a very good documentary indeed.

I remember that era, Raver. It was the Show Band Show on a weekend afternoon and is probably when I first got into big band music as a teenager.
Thanks for the link to the documentary, which I think I have seen before but will watch. |

Matt Monro - A Portrait Of, which I think may well be the video that Eileen and I discussed below but was taken off You Tube not long afterwards, is showing on Talking Pictues this afternoon, 4.15 - 6pm _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Matt made an appearance on a BBC 4 offering last night. It was a silver jubilee thing, with many of the stars from the previous 25 years. Some of it was a bit treacly (The Young Generation) but all in all, a nice trip down memory lane.
Fronted by Dane Vera, who was in excellent form, it was a pleasant enough hour's nostalgic entertainment, with Doddy, Norman, Val Doonican, and some other of mother's favourites.
And Cliff wielding an acoustic guitar!

I watched and enjoyed it, Raver, but had recorded it so fast-forwarded a couple of times. I liked the way each performer then introduced the next one. Lovely to see Doddy, Matt and Val in particular. And yes, Dame Vera was in great form. |
