Saw on Facebook this morning that Petula Clark is to host Tony's programme, for one week, as Martha Reeves did a while ago. One person said it would be this Saturday and another said she would be on on the 30th of January. I had a quick look at the schedule for this week and she's not listed and there isn't a full schedule for the 30th yet. Seeing as I'm a regular listener I' don't think I'll miss her.

The theme is theatre.

Showtunes, showtunes, showtunes! Really enjoyed Pet Clark's show sitting in for Tony, great songs and lots of little anecdotes , particularly liked the image of Topol carrying Petula over a rivulet of rain from a taxi.

Think I'll give this edition a miss, I'm not a fan of show tunes en masse. Glanced at the playlist and it didn't seem anything special.

I enjoyed this...only a few that I didn't care for, but yes, a nice change, as was the Friday musicals day. So much better than the disposable pop they usually play.

A little surprised that Pet didn't come out with her Elvis anecdote after playing his song, when he tried to hit on her and Karen Carpenter...

98.6 is one of those that instantly take me right back, Foggy. For some reason, my mind has always paired it up with Concrete and Clay.

I don't remember See You In September from back then, but I have heard it a few times since. It's very reminiscent of the Four Seasons, isn't it?

Another one he played was Craise Finton Kirk, which reminds me of the pirate ships. I do have the original on the Bee Gees 1st album, one of the first LPs I ever bought. Funny little song. I had to get rid of my LPs long ago, but thanks to the internet, I have it on the computer.

The Bee Gees original isn't as good as the cover, Foggy. At least I don't think so. You can't say that about too many Gibb brothers songs. Maybe Al Green's How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. Anyway, here's an interesting read on it...

This week's SOTS didn't tickle my fancy too much, though it was nice that Tony gave Mary Wilson a mention. Those Supremes singles really were supreme...what a songwriting team Holland Dozier and Holland were. I would recommend her book Dreamgirl, too. She was absolutely besotted with Tom Jones. Possibly as much as he was of himself!

I've still got that one to listen to Foggy! I'm just catching up on Feb 13th edition which was a good one.

Something I've picked up on over the last few weeks is that Sandie Shaw's singles are featuring regularly. Not complaining as it's great to hear them again.

I've just seen on Twitter that Tony recorded yesterday's SOTS before his sister Jackie died from Covid. I know some have thought he bangs on about it every week, but that's the times we live in. My youngest daughter's entire family were ill with it over Christmas. Her 14 year old eldest caught it from her grammar school. Except it wasn't the symptoms like loss of taste and smell etc, but more of the Kent variety, which wasn't on the NHS website, so they all thought her constant headache and feeling like someone was sitting on her chest was something else. She is an extremely good athlete and so luckily, fought it off after a few weeks. Then my daughter succumbed to it, and then her husband and their 3 and a half year old son. They had some tricky nights but have come through it, with only little things bothering them now. Also, my daughter has had asthma from a very early age and is expecting another son in May, so all I could do was to sit here and worry for days on end. She is a primary school teacher and bought her own masks and shields to protect herself at work, but caught it at home. I'm quite concerned that all schools are going back at the same time - it was rife at my other daughter's children's nursery and primary school before lockdown and just by good fortune, did they come out of that okay.

I know this is supposed to be a Radio 2 thing, so please excuse me. I hadn't intended to post anything so personal and grim, but once I started, I couldn't help it. Obviously, I must have needed to get it out of my system. That's what a year of shielding and no hugs does to you!

That is sad news Raver about Tony's sister. I did notice his frequent references over the past weeks but knew his father was a doctor so put it down to that. Also sorry to hear your family has been through the mill with it, I also think all schools back together won't help the number of cases.

Maybe we should have a general 'chat' thread somewhere? Especially in these times.

Thanks H. Tony B is taking a week off so cancelling his Sunday show today - I thought he did two - one on Radio London at lunchtime and a networked one for various BBC local stations. I expect that's quite something for a workaholic like him to do, though I'm sure it's more pleasure than work.

General chat is a funny one, isn't it? I'm sure I must have done one or two posts like it, back in the Jezza days, though I can't be sure. Did a few on Facebook once, which was music and nostalgic related and got all sorts of people liking it, not least my eldest daughter, who loved little tales of being at school and the music I was listening to at the time etc, along with some other things...books and musical tastes. One or two people wanted me to do some more, but I knew when to quit! Alright for them, as it takes no time at all to read, what I'd probably spent the best part of an hour to type!

But yes, general chat is a good thing, especially now. Though there are one or two things in the coffee bar that seem to cover that. I'm up for anything. Just looked at it and have discovered that His Lordship is a Postie. Even when it was snowing, the Posties round here were wearing shorts! The mere thought of it has made me turn the central heating on.

Becky,I was pleasantly surprised to hear the long version of Where Do You Go To although I have heard it before on radio and have it on a CD.

Sad news regarding Tony's sister, I had thought that he'd probably just been asked to push a positive message especially as his audience is probably of an older demographic. I'm guessing that he might possibly miss next week's show as he does appear to record them each week as he often has tributes to recently departed artists

Sound is not the best but don't think that really matters.

Not listenen to SOTS on the same day for ages but today's was a great one, especially if you like stuff from the mid 60s. Without checking things out, I'd guess a lot from 66 and 67.

Sad to say I've just about given up on SOTS. The recorded shows were OK bur I'm bored stupid with all the live dedications and the pointless blather with Dermot O'Leary. "Our old mate" didn't feel the need to waste time so I don't see why TB does. I also know roughly how dark it is at 6 am at any given time of year. Rant over

That was a very tasty playlist. I never realised how 'grovy' R1 was when it started up. Not Tony's show, anyway. I'd only ever catch a few minutes of him, before going to school, while my favourite R1 DJ's were Stuart Henry, David Symonds, Rosko and a few others, as the weekends were when I had time to listen.

As I type this, the Young Rascals original of How Can I Be Sure is playing on Boom. There some serendipity for you!

I honestly don't remember it at the time. David Cassidy's version is the one I heard first, or at least am conscious of. Unforgivable, I know.

I confess I now look at the playlist and if there's anything that's unfamiliar I'll investigate them on a well known streaming service (my son very kindly added me in to his account).

The Cowsills I hadn't heard for donkeys years, he always plays an obscure-ish Northern Soul track (Bob Brady and the Con Chords) and Cupid Inspiration's follow-up to Yesterday Has Gone.

I'm loving the New Year's Day show. I even laughed at a remark he made after playing a Cliff Richard record. Second hour is chosen by listeners.

Sun's streaming in through the window, after having to suffer scaffolding for the last couple of months. More like the gallows every day. I half expected to see Ruth Ellis. The work was done weeks ago.Thoroughly depressing. To top it off, my PC was playing up over the Xmas period. But yesterday, the scaffolding was taken down and I fixed my computer problem. Happy days at last. Let there be light!

Sorry to digress. All the best for 2022.

Thanks H. It's nice to listen to music etc on it, as I have a woofer (ha!) as well as speakers on it, so I really missed it when it wasn't working.
