Recently discovered this new radio station.

A brilliant line of DJ's with brilliant music played.

Stand out shows for me include Nicky Horne, David Hamilton, Graham Dene amongst others.

Would certainly give it a massive thumbs up-well worth tuning in.

I agree, I have just bought another DAB radio on the strength of listening to this new station. It is everything that Radio 2 used to be, but sadly is no more.

Excellent to hear. A great line of up of DJ's/presenters at the weekends also.
They even offer a free regular newsletter which is worth signing up for.

Right now I am listening to Roger 'Twiggy' Day doing a great alternative to SOTS and at a sensible time.....8-10am. It was definitely worth buying my new radio and I have now bought a tuner too. Very Happy

I am sorry Becky, I don't know, but perhaps Mark will. I think it is probably unlikely though.

They don't, unfortunately.

Boom isn't bad at all. From a music point of view the weekend output is best.
Apart from Roger Day, on Saturday John's Jukebox and David Symonds truffle out a good few forgotten nuggets. On Sundays the Vintage Chart Show is POTP in all but name (and presenter) covering 60s/70s, and in the late evening Bill Bingham plays a very varied and interesting selection.

Thanks for that,Ron.

Pity they don't do a listen again facility - the BBC and some other radio stations have rather spoilt us with that. I managed to catch the Vintage Chart Show today. Smile

During lockdown I found Owen Money on Radio Wales. A regular listen for me now. On a Sunday morning he does a programme with music from the Sixties and Seventies.

He was around at the time, has met and knows lots of the artistes from back then and has lots of tales and trivia to tell.

What I want from a radio programme.

My two pennyworth.
Favourite Shows on Boom are the daily breakfast Show with Graham Dene and the excellent Nicky Horn late afternoons.
Both ex Capital Radio DJ's.
The variety of music played is unbelievably good.
Would strongly recommend both shows.

The best thing (for me) about Brian Matthew's Sounds of the Sixties was that he'd play a good proportion of less familiar tracks, even misses, rather than hits. That is why I quite like Boom - although their weekday daytime playlist is mostly greatest hits, the likes of Roger Day at the weekend have a bit more breadth. For example, in the last half hour we've had Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Jim Stafford, Madonna, Jan S Robinson, Bob Dylan, England Dan and John Ford Coley, Carolyn Crawford and Eddie Cochran.

BBC Radio Scotland is also a good source of quality music across the genres in the evenings, with presenters such as Iain Anderson, Ricky Ross, Bryan Burnett and Natasha Raskin Sharp (of Bargain Hunt fame)

Haven't listened to Ricky Ross on BBC Scotland in ages. I must rectify that.

I agree with Mark about Graham Dene's breakfast show. He plays a really nice mix and one record earlier, Lemon Pipers - Blueberry Blue, I hadn't heard for many years. I've only managed to catch Nicky Horne's programme a couple of times, but he's always been good, right back from Your Mother Wouldn't Like It in the Capital 194 glory days.

Yes, I heard the Lemon Pipers. I reckon that's the first play it's had anywhere in a very long time.

I couldn't stay tuned for very long, just long enough to catch an ear worm for the day. No, not Amy Winehouse, Howard Keel's Bless Your Beautiful Hide Rolling Eyes

Ah, from the film which turned me into a fan of musicals at the age of 13. I still have my Howard Keel scrapbook in the loft.

Funny his name should come up on here. The other day one of his songs ( So In Love duetting with Kathryn Grayson) came up on my Facebook timeline. When it had finished I left Youtube on and listened to more from him. He had such a beautifully rich voice which I probably didn't appreciate as much when I was younger - too busy with pop music. Lovely surprise to hear Roger play one of my favourite B-sides on his programme last Saturday morning - The Beach Boys - Girl Don't Tell Me. Think I heard him say it is a regular slot?

Still a bit miffed there is no listen again facility - phones calls (lovely as they are) made me miss a lot of his programme.

It was the other way round for me, Becky. Howard Keel was my first real crush and I much preferred songs from musicals to most pop music. I was never a rock'n'roller, with more of a liking for romantic ballads. I was all Dickie Valentine, Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra etc.

Boom Radio appears to have just launched a Listen Again / On Demand facility.

The Radioplayer page has suddenly spawned an On Demand column with two of this evening's shows (David Hamilton and the Easy Hour)

So they have! I've a feeling that it's going to be just the pre-recorded shows, as it's still just those two shows on offer at the moment. I'd love it if the David Symonds show is a listen again, but we can but hope. Thanks Ron.

The Vintage Charts programme is also on listen again, along with one or two others that are pre-recorded. 1966 is one of the top 20 charts from yesterday's offering.

Nice.

I know Johnnie Walker used to play Shine On You Crazy Diamond when he covered for Terry Wogan, but there can't be many DJs on daytime general radio who would play Pink Floyd's "Time" followed by Trisha Yearwood's "She's In Love With The Boy" as Nicky Horne did this afternoon

In fact, I don't think I've ever heard them played separately, let alone together Laughing

Neither have I. I wouldn't put it past Bob Harris though!

A great show yesterday morning with Roger Day commemorating the demise of the pirate ships by playing 1967 records for two hours.

I wasn't able to listen to all of Roger's show on Saturday, but what I heard was excellent, as usual.

Bob Harris has put his entire archive of playlists from all of his shows on his website. His show, and the wonderful range of music, is sadly missed from Radio 2, and anywhere else, on a Saturday night.

https://archive.bobharris.org

Sad to note, Boom and David Symonds have parted company, at very short notice.

That's a real kick in the teeth, sacking Dave Symonds. I didn't know until I read this, Ron. Eventually found him on FB and he explains all. However, he does have a station called The Roolz, which is pretty good, judging by the last 15 mins, so at least he's doing what he loves.

http://104.244.72.214/index.html

I did know about Bob's playlists, though. He's had them up for a while now. Also, he held his annual Bobfest at the weekend. I've seen a fair bit of it and it's well worth a look. Dear ol' Joe Brown makes a brief appearance, talking to Bob onstage. Three hours of good music. Even Jackson Browne does a couple of songs, though not at Bob's garden.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynda0_zp-RI

Our old friend Andy Walmsley has David's Boom shows on his Mixcloud account, along with some others. I haven't had time to fully look at them, but no doubt they are all good.

Thanks for that, raver. The Roolz sounds to be right up my street, I know where to go on Saturday night, and many another, now, other things permitting.

I thought song selection might have been an issue. Why does everything have to be so safe, so homogenised?

They've recruited Dave Brown, who's been at a loose end since leaving Smooth a couple of years ago. His speciality is soul and Motown - since he's pitched against Craig Charles I'm not sure how well that's going to go.

They've also signed Judi Spiers (Pebble Mill). Oh dear.

It would be good if Bill Kenwright could do some of his excellent programmes as a special now and then too.

I don't think they could afford Bob Harris. He's carved out a niche as 'Mr Country' and is probably content with what he has now, though the Beeb treated him shabbily with regards to his overnight three hour show. They've never replaced it with anything near as good.

He's doing gigs with Danny Baker, which started before the pandemic. An unlikely pairing, but apparently it works.

I've found Graham Dene's breakfast show a little sugary of late. Nicky Horne's show by far my favourite, along with Roger Day. And the listen again has died a death. Pity, as the double chart programme was always a decent addition. Now, it boasts, if that's the right word, Esther Rantzen and nobody else. As for Judi Spiers, I'm wondering where they will shoehorn her in. I do remember she had a pleasant enough show on R2 a few years ago. An evening slot, I would imagine.

Homogenized indeed.

Another great B-side played this morning - Stick With Me Baby by The Everly Brothers. Flip side of Temptation - great value for money. Cool

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss did a lovely cover of it on their Raising Sand album.

The television mast caught fire and it isn't repairable. They are going to build another one, not as tall, but the landowner is being difficult about access to the site. Latest news yesterday was that it could be another two months before we get ours back. They have got lots of relays in place now but nothing reaches where we live. There are pages and pages of updates since this happened but there is a photo in this early one.

Right now I am listening to Roger 'Twiggy' Day doing a great alternative to SOTS and at a sensible time.....8-10am. It was definitely worth buying my new radio and I have now bought a tuner too. Very Happy

Yes it seems to be a regular slot Becky. I just love listening to Boom Radio, it is radio as it used to be. Very Happy

Right, thanks Angela. Boom Radio sounds as if it is a real boon for you. Very Happy

Boom Radio has really come into its own, we are now in Week 4, Day 2, of no TV or my favourite local radio station. Crying or Very sad

What's happening,Angela?

Another great B-side played this morning - Stick With Me Baby by The Everly Brothers. Flip side of Temptation - great value for money. Cool

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss did a lovely cover of it on their Raising Sand album.

Now you've said it, Angela, I do remember hearing about this on the radio. I heard the word North and went to check if my TV was working - it was so I promptly forgot about it.

Hope it gets sorted soon.
