I doubt I'll listen as I enjoyed the music that both Don and David Jacobs played. Chat at that time of night isn't what I look for.

The last time I heard Annika was when she did the early Saturday show before SOTS was moved and we used to travel to Newcastle regularly so were up and about earlier than normal. I'll maybe glance at the playlist afterwards before listening.

I've not got to listening to Don's last show yet, but I've recorded it.

I sent an email to Don, early September, saying I was sorry the show was ending and mentioned a song that had a special meaning that he had played in other series. He'd also played it the previous week which prompted me. Maybe a coincidence but he played it again 2 weeks after I'd emailed! The song was Long Ago And Far Away.

Anyway last Friday I had a nice reply from his producer Jodi Keane thanking me for my words and said Don would really miss doing the show. She said Don would be on Radio 2 on Christmas Day which Ian has already mentioned further up.

Anneka is a nice enough person,Eileen, but I can't help feeling her (upbeat) personality is more suited to a morning radio show rather than a late night one. I'll have a look at the playlist and that is what will ultimately decide it for me.

Long Ago And Far Away is a lovely song,Helen.

Thanks for that Ian. I'll record it to listen to later.

Thanks Ian.

Have listened to the first two episodes and it's not unlike his radio programme, in that he is telling little stories - this time about himself and his family - but playing records, albeit not in full, as well. Perhaps he doesn't want to give too much away from the book. Smile

So there I was, having listened to Desert Island Discs earlier, looking for something else to listen to. Went on the R2 'Sounds' page, didn't fancy Sue Perkins, so clicked on schedule, with a view to listen to Liza T. Scrolled up and saw this...2am!! Don Black plays an hour of Matt Monro as it would have been his 90th birthday next week.

Needless to say, it's a sublime hour of beautiful music. At 2 in the morning. Total disrespect as far as I'm concerned, to both Don Black and people who enjoy the majestic tones of Matt Monro. I'd never have known about it if it wasn't for Sue Perkins.

Anyway..yadda yadda. For your delight....Mr Terry Parsons.

Raver thanks so much for this! I had noticed it the other day when perusing the Radio Times but promptly forgot about it. What a strange time for it to air though, it's not as if it is a repeat.

You're welcome H. Putting it on at 2am is an insult to those of us who have been faithful listeners for many years. I did check if it was a repeat or being repeated, but nothing. R2 is now officially an 80's station. I can't remember where I actually read that...probably on something that Ian posted up. But yes, it is station policy. Hence the disappearance of all the programmes lately.

The powers that be, at Radio 2, should be ashamed of themselves treating Don and Matt in such a way.

They deserve much better.

Thank you, Raver, I had no idea that was on - but at 2am!!! That is just appalling and very insulting to Don who has given us such terrific programmes over the years and Matt whose lovely voice was admired by Sinatra.

That is a crazy time to broadcast the Mat Monroe special. Hopefully it will get a decent-timed repeat over Christmas

Speaking of which - Don has a two-hour show starting at 10pm on Christmas Day.

Thanks for that, Ian. Last night Clare Teal gave Don's hour of Matt a plug telling us how to listen to it, which was something, I suppose. She or her producer obviously realised that at least some of her regular listeners would be interested and would not have noticed it in the schedules.

I'm currently listening to BBC Surrey where Graham Dene is deputising for Sylvie Blackmore. Graham has said that he is to play an interview he did with Don Black on today's show.

Diane Warren is Tracks Of My Years this week. I think she knows a thing or two about songwriting. Today's choices were Born Free and To Sir With Love.

So I did a little google after, as recommended by my doctor and clicked on this, which I would recommend to all Don fans. I've yet to watch the YT vid on it, though.

Born Free to me is the perfect combination of composer, lyricist and singer and I have never understood why To Sir, With Love wasn't a hit here but was a number one in the US

I could never work that one out either, I have a feeling that it was a 'b' side over here but don't quote me!

It was a B-side to a totally unmemorable song called Let's Pretend over here and a B-Side to The Boat That I Row in the US, until a DJ played the flip side, which is all in that article, but it's well known in any case. At least 'Boat' is a half decent song.

I've not seen it before either Raver and thanks for the reminder. I thought I'd noticed 'something of interest' in the weekend guide but then forget to set recorder!
