Teletext news today.
A seven year-old boy from Liverpool who was upset seeing a neighbour arguing with his mum went to the kitchen, got a knife and stabbed the woman several times in the backside.
He was not arrested.
Right then what should we do with this kid?
Ask him where he saw knives being used?
Then what

well it might be worth starting by looking at his mental condition. A lot of these kids turn out to be suffering from illnesses which are either not diagnosed or treated same as in the adult population of voilent offenders. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Yeah, but what if the kid just says 'I saw someone in a film get a knife and stab a lady who was shouting'. |

Well at that age I dont think a child can explain their actions. The age at which they can be tried for a crime is 10 isn't it? I would think that there are several options to pursue such as the child's mental state, the environment and upbring by the parents, etc. Depending on the outcome of those questions, the child could be taken into care _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Assuming there is no medical or previous exposure to violence in a child's everyday home life to account for such an extreme reaction.i.e was it done out of malice or out of real fear. I think generally that there is more than a grain of truth in the above quote.
In the dim in distant past when I was growing up I wouldn't have seen some of the films that are freely available today for the youngest of children to see. For instance I remember being really fed up because I wasn't old enough (and didn't look old enough either,to try and get in) to see 'Carrie' when it was released, which is pretty tame by todays standards. People didn't have videos/dvd players you either saw films at the pictures or waited years for them to come on to the tv. Which in it's own way provided some protection from young people watching inappropriate films.
Now dvds are in the shops months after the film is released.Film channels broadcast films quickly. A dvds may be purchased by someone old enough to watch it but once it's in the home it could easily end up being watched by a child to young to really understand what they're is seeing.
Violence is glamourized, the playing of a violent computer game, again purchased perfectly legally but once in the home is equally played by little Johnny who at 6,7,8 or 9 years of age is to young to process it fully in their minds. They may seem uneffected by it all at the time but who knows what effect that exposure is going to have 5,10,15 years down the line.
I'm not saying it's all the fault of film or computer games it's not and I'm not saying everything should be hearts and flowers, The Waltons and Little house on the Prairie either. There's no one answer. It will take a combination of things but something needs to change. I despair of a society in which a group of 12 year olds thought repeatedly firing a pellet gun into a playground of children was a great way to pass the time. They didn't see danger????? or even more worrying if they did, they didn't care.
How many more youngsters are going to be killed by other youngsters? How many more children kill themselves because of bullying? It's senseless. Someone said to me the other day "our children are out of control".... some maybe so but it's adults who are supposed to be the responsible ones here. To quote Whitney 'children are our future' It's not just the parents who have a responsibility.Society needs to nuture them, lead by example and fill them with respect for other people, other peoples property and themselves and their own surroundings. I know alot of that sounds like the usual claptrap trotted out in these discussions but with each passing year it seems to make more and more sense.
God it's offical I've turned into my mother Sorry to go on. I'll shut up now (you'll be relieved to hear) _________________ Put some records on while I pour |
