Perhaps some of you Scottish members can help me out. I'm heading over to Edinburgh on a day trip next Thursday and was looking for tips on places to visit while I'm there. I'll be around the city centre.

If you fancy a bit of history, head for the castle- it's wonderful

I was in Edinburgh once before - problem is it was a school trip almost 26 years ago (when I was 11) so I don't really remember much of it.

One thing I do remember is that on the last day we were taken into some kind of shopping centre and let loose for a couple of hours. I remember a WH Smith type shop (Menzies?) which had magazines on the ground floor and a music section upstairs. Its probably not there any longer but it would be nice if someone could confirm where it would have been.

I go for the Fringe in August, and recommend the Castle. Plus Holyrood is quite interesting too - if only to see how dark and miserable it is to live in a Royal house. (also note how each room is named after the time of day, as if the residents are simpletons...)

Scott Monument provides great views, as does this park thing at the end of Princes Street.

That shop you mention may be in the Princes Street Mall, near the railway station.

go on the tourist bus tour - we took our french friends on it when they were over - it's just a lot easier: you see a lot of the town that you couldn't see in the same amount of time walking... edinburgh is very hilly! and you stay warm (pack a big jumper!)

Hmm - if you like vegetarian food - go to Hendersons (google it and you'll find the website) - it's just off Princes St and near Waverly

There's the art gallery just oppodite Waverly as well.
If you're a fan of rugby - Murryfield??

Hmm, what else, the castle and Princes St Gardens, the Royal Mile, the Houses of Parliament (that crazy building - you can get off at this stop on the tourist bus)

If you're there for longer - come to Glasgow! It's way better Wink

The tour bus is definitely the best way to see the sights. The Royal mile is a must if you ignore the tourist shops (but then again you will be a tourist!).

The Royal Museum and the Museum of Scotland, both in Charmers Street (very near Royal Mile), are both very good if you are into a bit of history.

Anyway you can't go wrong if you keep your eyes and ears open. Was there anything in particular you wanted to find?

I found the camera obscura a really interesting place ( if it's still there).Best on a sunny day though.

Will probably take the bus tour and do a few touristy things such as visiting the castle.

Sadly I'm only there for the day but I intend to cram as much as I can into the day! I'll report back on Friday (but not too early in the day! Smile

)

I made it back and have to say I had a brilliant day!

Arrived in the city centre around 9:45 and got on one of the tour buses as far as the stop near the castle. Had a quick walk around and headed towards the castle stopping at Camera Obscura on the way. What a fantastic place it is - somewhere I would recommend. After about an hour there it was on to the castle itself. Spent a couple of hours there and had lunch in the cafe there just after the one o'clock gunfire. Next it was back on the bus as far as the Museum of Childhood and then on as far as Cannongate where I paid a visit to "Unknown Pleasures" record shop. Finished the bus tour and was back at Waverly station around 3:30. After a quick snack in McDonalds it was shopping time - I went along Princes Street and then came back down through the park towards the train station where I caught the bus back to the airport.

As I said it was a great day - the sun even came out for a while! There was so much more I wanted to do but didn't have time for - next time I'll make it a longer visit!

Compared to some cities, Edinburgh is small, but you can't do it in one day!
