The papers are full of indignation because it's transpired that Christmas and Easter editions of BBC's Songs of Praise were recorded in Lichfield Cathedral on the same day last November.

But this isn't news--it's been happening for years. Way back in the 80s, when Roger Royle was on the SOP presentation rota, he recalled going to (I think) Liverpool Anglican Cathedral and doing programmes for Advent and Palm Sunday on the same day. To me it seems nothing worse than a sensible use of resources. What do others think?

Ian.

They could always repeat last years. After all the story is the same every year. Laughing

As long as it's a good Songs of Praise, Who Cares when it was recorded? To be able to use Lichfield Cathedral for both recordings is a bonus. It;s not as if there is going to ba a phone - in vote.

It's another way for the papers to have a dig at the BBC. ITV used to do it with their Hymn shows as well, and they were axed years back. My mum was at one recorded in Summer, but they all had to wear thick coats and scarves - they were melting!

People are always moaning about the BBC wasting money but then when they try and save money by shooting 2 programs at the same time they still moan. Rolling Eyes

Who cares anyway, it's only a load of people singing. Laughing

Yes I agree with you. I don't think people quite understand just how much these outside broadcast jobbies actually cost. Mr. S used to work in broadcasting and he said that the OB facilities alone would cost well into 5 figures per day. Add to that all the other production team costs and you're quickly getting up to 50k and more.

Do people complain about a whole series of TV panel game shows being recorded in 4 days in a studio in order to maximise the use of resources? I think that "Deal or No Deal" is recorded at the rate of 5 shows per day down in Bristol. I don't hear people maoning about that. So what's the difference?

Like you say, if they decided not to take advantage of this opportunity people would then moan - or, shall we say, that the red top press would find out and make a point of publishing a story about it in their gutter-press pages!

And, as had been said, it's only a load of people singing religious songs.

Is this not the same as recording back to back editions of Mastermind...moving the audience around so viewers wouldn't realise Confused

I'm sure a lot of shows are done the same.
