|
|
Looking at the BBC web site tonight it looks as though Blair is going to issue an apology about our involvement in the slave trade.
This supposed apology makes me feel uncomfotable. Personally I don't agree that he should.
Indeed when he is going to make an apology to the UK electorate about his cash for honours policy.
I wonder in years to come how the history books will consider this man-a good ,bad or indifferent prime minister. |

It's a difficult one this, the slave trade was without doubt absolutely awful but then again it was 200 years ago so what has that got to do with Blair? |

Though I'm a practising Christian, I think that the outbreak of mass contrition on this issue is utterly bonkers. Slavery certainly was an evil and the Church should indeed be concerned by its continuation in some parts of the world but how can today's generation be responsible for something that ceased to happen 200 years ago? Could it be that some descendants are attracted by the smell of new-mown money?
Will the Queen apologise for all Henry VIII's unjustifiable executions or the Catholic Church for those popes of long ago who fathered children?

Saying sorry is easy. Its only words after all and it makes the apologiser feel much better than the victim. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Sins of the past should remain there. I don't think an apology by this government should be forthcoming at all - I would not apologise. I regret that it happened and am ashamed that anyone could ever get involved in the practice but it was a long time ago in a different world.
I wouldn't expect the Germans to apologise for the world wars - they had no control over it and to the German on the street, had nothing to do with them.
A tricky issue as it brings back simmering emotions. A wicked time that most certainly should not be forgotten but we can move on. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |
