Let's play a little game of consequences.

1. The Government announces that teachers are to have new disciplinary powers.

2. A teacher deals with a badly-behaved pupil by invoking these.

3. The parents decide that the child's human rights have been breached.

4. They have no difficulty in finding a lawyer who will take the case on a no win, no fee basis.

5. When it comes to court, the judge agrees that the child's human rights have been breached and awards substantial damages against the education authority involved.

6. The new powers are quietly withdrawn.

A parable of our time. Will it happen like this?

Ian.
