Remember the good old days, when a single was released and THEN played on the radio, so as more and more people got to hear it and buy it, the single actually climbed up the charts
Would you like to see that system return Are you happy with the present system Or did you not care about a records position in the charts back then and still don't now _________________ "Timpani!, Timpani!, They've all got it Timpani!"- All drummers know the pain of skin trouble. |

I remember those days well. When a single earned it's chart placing a lot more than it seems to now, though it wasn't all honey & sunshine then either. I can remember getting sick of hearing certain tracks on R1 after they had been 'played to death' then, just as I do nowadays. And thinking why didn't that 'newspin' get played more than once, it deserved to chart. Those were the days when ILR offered a viable alternative to the BBC if you didn't like what Radio 1 had on offer. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I think the practice in this country, and probably copied from the US, dates back slightly further, to the offshore pirate stations. In their eagerness to be hip, modern and ahead of the BBC, and obviously fed by the record companies' tacit support, they did play new releases at least one week before issue, so that they could appear in the station chart (Fab Forty etc) before the official, or anybody else's, one.
I used to listen to Radio London (Big L); each DJ (with the exception of John Peel) had his own Record Of The Week (even when they had their week off), and they all tended to get played in each three-hour show. In addition there was the station Power Play, which, if memory serves, got played every hour, after the News summary.
So, you see, not that much different to today's A-Playlist, except that the advance period has stretched somewhat - R2 have started to play the Kaiser Chiefs' next single The Angry Mob, which is not actually released until May 21st. And last Monday SK and TW contrived to play Stefy's "Chelsea" within half an hour of each other. _________________ Ron |

I think I stopped listening to/taking notice of the charts about 1990 or so. Since then albums have been more important to me, although I 've never used the Album Chart as a yardstick re my purchases. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Ron,
Both times I thought I was listening to the start of 'Sweet Dreams' by the Eurythmics _________________ Geddon

I started following the charts back in the early 80s and used to listen in every week to hear the new countdown. But when JK & Joel took over they ruined the show with silly phone-in competitions and missing out tracks which didn't fit into the station's playlist policy. After a short while I didn't even bother looking at the charts on-line. But at the start of the year I tuned in to see how the new downloads rules would affect things and have to say I'm still listening. They still waste about 15/20 minutes at the start with that pointless retro competion (which rarely goes back more than about 8 years anyway) but they do seem to play more of the tracks. And the chart itself has improved with singles entering lower down and climbing as download sales pick up over the weeks. |

The silver lining to this cloud I suppose is that it does save me money, because by the time a record* becomes available in the shops I'm sick of hearing it and end up not buying it. Most of my purchases tend to be vinyl replacement, deleted stuff or albums I didnt get round to buying first time round in my youth.

The advent of punk saw my last serious look at the charts. Like others, now I replace the old prog rock stuff that I couldn't afford before and the (very) occasional new album. _________________ Geddon

When Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 'Relax' got to No1 in the charts after it was banned from being played by the BBC (which happened after they had already performed that track once on Top Of The Pops) You could really hear the frustration at not being able to play the then current No1, especially towards the end of it's 5 week run. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |
