Richard Allinson played this song today 27/01-a truly fantastic song.

I have always wondered though, did George Harrison have this song in waiting so as to speak as it was released very shortly after the Beatles broke up or did he just write it as soon as he became a solo artist.

Yes My Sweet Lord is a classic.
It was originally written for Billy Preston who was on Apple at the time and appeared on his album.
Eric Clapton played guitar on this Phil Spector produced track.
Criket i've gone all Allinson!!!!!!

Shakin' Stevens has covered another of George's big hit singles - Got My Mind Set On You - for his forthcoming album. It may even be released as a single later in the year!

Yes, he should as the resultant court case meant that he got no royalties for the song.

Ian.

Liked the piano on that - you can really tell the production was done by Jeff Lynne.

I also liked Wreck of the Hesperus.

I quite like 'Unconsciousness Rules' from his 'Somewhere In England' album

I like "All those years ago". One of the best tribute songs written.

"Weird Al" Yankovic did a great parody of that called (This Song Is Just) 6 Words Long

Love this track, along with "I've Got My Mind set On You" from 1987.

"All Things Must Pass", Harrison's box-set album which he recorded at the tail-end of the Beatles falling-out, is a masterpiece imho. I still have a first edition copy, although I play the CD set now. The jam-session (featuring just about everybody who was anybody on the alternative circuit at the time) is great. I didn't much like it at the time - maybe I was too young to appreciate it - but it's great listening.

My fave track on the set is "Isn't It Pity", both versions. Not as cute as My Sweet Lord (which I always thought was a bit sickly though still listenable) but lovely words. One of my favourite songs ever.

Johnie Walker's favourite, I believe, is "Awaiting On You All". Brilliant performance and production (by Phil Spector).

Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy and Randy George did a beautiful version of 'What Is Life' on the 'Cover To Cover' CD! They also do Badfinger's 'Day After Day', which George produced.

Morse's old band Spock's Beard covered 'Beware Of Darkness' on their second album.

I used to think George wrote 'If Not For You' when Olivia Newton-John covered it, because it had this Harrison-esque slide guitar. When my sister got All Things Must Pass, I noticed it was Bob Dylan's song.

I like "My Sweet Lord" too, but I think I prefer "What Is Life".

The Beatles were / are my favourite band, but my all-time favourite 'Desert Island Disc' is Kirsty MacColl's version of Billy Bragg's "A New England".

Cool

I tend to agree that if push comes to shove that "What is Life?" is the best song/record produced by George Harrrison from his entire solo output.

Richard played it (My Sweet Lord) again this morning, just after the long joke about the Norwegian lady.

It's a common assumption that George had several songs that he held back from The Beatles, although since two of his very best, Something and Here Comes The Sun, were among the last they recorded, for Abbey Road (much of Let It Be having been recorded earlier), it's debatable. He did, however, record a demo of All Things Must Pass in February 1969 which did get left until the break-up.

Agree about What Is Life, though. Been covered a few times as well - can't think of any cover of MSL (probably wouldn't get permission).

Jonathan King did a cover version of 'He's So Fine' which borrowed the arrangement of 'My Sweet Lord' to show just how similar the songs were - if you can ignore the illicit activities of the person who did it, it's quite amusing.

I remember the JY prog once played 'My Sweet Lord' in one hour, and 'He's So Fine' the next - I wonder whether the producer was feeling a bit mischievous that day? Wink

Despite the plagiarism, I think George was a superb songwriter - it's just a shame he was rather in the shadow of Lemon and Meccano, as he was producing some brilliant stuff.
