In a rare coup against Radio 2, the jazz have signed up Jamie Cullum. I thought Radio 2 might try to bring him in to cover for Hump in the weeks he was not on air.

Good riddance as far as I'm concerned. Cullum's recent special with Quincy Jones was excruciating.

Well I thought he was quite good personally.

I think it was actually Michel Bubble that was better on R2 at Christmas now that I remember properly. But Cullum was ok as well

PS Isn't it great that Helen Mayhew is back on the radio fulltime after being let down by Radio 2.

Yes it's great about Helen Mayhew.

As for Cullum - his concert may have been fine, but I had to turn off his Quincy Jones special, despite wanting to hear Quincy talk. It was unbearable, as Cullum just wittered on aimlessly, unable to speak or ask a decent question. When he eventually got a question out he couldn't be bothered with the answer and only seemed to be interested in the work with Michael Jackson.

There was a rumour that a certain Sunday night Radio 2 presenter might have been offered a slot of the jazz at the weekend as well, but so far nothing has come to pass.

They wouldn't need to do that - from Monday 16th April he shares his slot with Jools Holland, each hosting half a year.

the jazz launched live programming today. the first voice on air was Helen Mayhew.

There was an interesting article on it in last Sunday's Times:

Down boy-easy tiger.

Joking aside she is a very able presenter inho-why does she not figure on Radio 2-does Lesley not rate her.

My wife thinks Lesley Douglas does not rate female presenters full stop.

Would be nice if Janice Long for example was given a run out on the daytime schedules now and again.

So you are not related to Helen or are you? You have me confused now Confused

I think she may be on slightly early on thejazz 9-midnight. It would be great if she was on from 10-2am as she has a great late night style.

I wonder how much longer before Jools Holland, Courtney Pine and Clare Teal are lured to The Jazz? I wouldn't mind hearing Parky hosting a Sunday teatime slot on there.

Courtney Pine has a show starting this week on thejazz (Sunday night). Strangely he also has a new show starting on Radio 2 this week (Tuesday night at 11.30).
