It occurs to me that there are three interrelated anniversaries coming up next year.

It'll be 25 years since Sounds of the Sixties started.

It'll be 50 years since the first edition of Saturday Club.

It'll be Brian Matthew's 80th birthday.

Sounds to me that R2 should be planning something big as a celebration.

Ian.

No, just like we don't yet have a Sound of the Eighties, there wasn't a Sound of the Sixties till 1983.

Ian, did Brian Matthew present SOTS in 1983? He was still presenting Round Midnight then. I know Simon Dee had a spell in 1988 but I don't have info before that. What night/time was it on in the 80's?

Are you sure Sounds of the Sixties started as recently as 1983 Ian?

I'm sure I heard it before I moved from the NE and that was in 83.

At some point it was produced at the BBC's Whiteladies Road, Bristol, studios back in the day when Siiiiiiiiiiiiimon Deeeeeeeeeee came out of exile to present it (for a short period). Dunno if that was pre-1983 though. I'm sure John W. gave some info on this a while back.

According to a website, the location of which I can't now recall, SOTS was first broadcast in February 1983. This tallies with my own admittedly rough recollection.

Its first presenter was Keith Fordyce. After he left there was a whole long list of guest presenters of variable calibre before Simon Dee had a spell on. He used to refer to the listeners as crumblies.

Brian Matthew has been its presenter since 1990.

I should have aded a fourth relevant anniversary, namely that in 2008 it will be 60 years since Brian Matthew's first broadcast.

Of course Radio 1 will be 40 years old come September, so consequently that means it's also 40 years since 'The Light Programme' turned into Radio 2. I wonder what, if any, celebrations there will be to mark those occasions.

Hi Ian

After I'd posted about 83 I had a feeling that I'd heard Keith Fordyce present a show. It must have been before June which is when we moved. I knew I'd heard it back up north!

I used to have a cassette of Simon Dee presenting but think it got detroyed.
