This is usually on at a bad time for me but yesterday we had the unusual experience of having no family members visiting so I listened to the lot.
Nothing wrong with any individual items--indeed, pieces like Faure's Overture from his suite Masques et Bergamasques (a one-time sig tune of Woman's Hour) and Stanford's the Blue Bird are particular favourites of mine--but somehow the whole wasn't quite the sum of its parts. It was all too bland and safe. But it can take time for presenters to blend into programmes so, whilst I wouildn't listen every week, I'll dip in again from time to time.
One more point--I like to know who is performing on ALL items. This information was omitted several times yesterday evening.

Hi Ian,
I came on to ask what everyone thought of Alan Titchmarsh's show so far, so I'll add it to your post if you don't mind.
I've caught the first half hour of all 3 shows up to now but not lasted the whole show. A few that I did enjoy last night, Calling All Workers and HMS Pinafore overture.
I think the timing is too early and it's messy because of starting on the half hour. Not a problem if there are no news breaks every hour but at that time of day there are. There are also too many instrumentals, the latter point has just hit me as I'm writing.
I also wonder if 90 mins would be enough?

Noticed the increased nod towards the light music fans last night. Obviously this is in response to comments made here & elsewhere.
The timings & interuptions take away from the show. How come Gambo has no 7pm news on Saturday, but they put news and travel on at 7pm & 8pm on Sunday nights? Is there more news & travel on a Sunday night? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Not so sure about more news on a Sunday but more far more travel at that time on a Sunday evening.
I think they need to put Johnnie Walker back to 5pm, as that doesn't sound right either. It's okay for a live show to have 2 news breaks but not when they are recorded as JW's and Alan's are.

I suppose traffic news is something that divides people. You either appreciate it or you think it is a nuisance. Personally it makes me switch over or off at the weekends. It makes the station sound too similar to the daytime weekday set up. Its like 24 hour shopping. Cant we just have a oasis of calm every now & then? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

This programme would, IMO, be a lot better if it had been given to Brian Kay, who is now left without a show. |

The roads are really busy on Sunday night though Earnie. We came back from the NE last Sunday, and the difference from a Saturday, which we do fairly frequently, was amazing. Far more trucks as well. I remember doing the Sunday trip last year before travel news came on a Sunday, and we were stuck for ages. If you know what is ahead you can make a detour.

Gillian Reynolds commented on Alan's new show this week in the Telegraph.
The relevant bits are:
=========================
"'Get Alan back to the soil," ends one anguished letter to me this week, one of many I have received since Alan Titchmarsh arrived on Radio 2 on Sunday evenings a fortnight ago. His two-hour show replaced two long- established programmes, Melodies for You presented by Sheridan Morley and Your Hundred Best Tunes presented by Richard Baker.
Personally, I prefer it for its eclecticism and lack of presentational solemnity. I am, it seems, alone. Many people preferred the music on Your Hundred Best Tunes and can't see why there's no room for such a programme on Radio 2 now.
Others have a more visceral response. "I can't stand his voice," says one reader. "Verbal offerings of a meaningless nature," says another. "Inane twitterings," says someone else. Now that's odd. One of the Sunday critics remonstrated with Titchmarsh for not talking enough."

Interesting. I've nothing against Alan's voice or his wittering, it's just the music is, well, not quite right.

Touche !! (sorry can't do the accent thingy!).
It's not what you say but how you say it, which is why I don't find Gardeners World half as good as it was when Alan Titchmarsh did it. Same with you know who Ernie! _________________ 88 - 91 FM this is Radio 2 from the BBC!

Why so you think that Ernie?
Enjoyed a some of last night's 'tunes'. A couple of ads amongst them. The dancing milk bottles and another one, a bank maybe, that came from The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Another was a TV theme.
Wish they'd hurry up with the playlist....

He is apparently in discussions with ITV to do a chat show in daytime, possibly at 5pm. If it comes off, he would presumably be exclusive to ITV for tv work. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

He also has another natural history program coming up soon.
I'm not sure Alan would be interested in being exclusive 'property' of ITV but we'll just have to wait and see. So it's a chat show they want him to do, well it can't be any worse than Sharon Osbourne can it. |

ITV has confirmed that it is recruiting BBC personality Alan Titchmarsh to host his first series for the commercial network.
Titchmarsh has signed up to make 40 hour-long episodes of The Alan Titchmarsh Show for early afternoons from this autumn on ITV1.
He will still continue to present his existing shows on the BBC.

For those not registered here is the article from the Groiniad.
Newspapers
I get the Daily Telegraph, mainly for the letters page and obituaries which I always turn to first. At weekends I get the Sunday Express, having grown rather irritated with the Sunday Times. It's become bossy and too fond of dictating my agenda every weekend. Every time I read it I felt grumpy, so I gave up.
Magazines
Country Life is my great solace; I wouldn't miss it for anything. Not just for the houses, it has great features, too. I also get Gardens Illustrated and the Garden, which is the journal of the Royal Horticultural Society.
Books
I'm halfway through a volume of James Lees-Milne's diaries. I tend to do most of my reading before I go to sleep at night and find that diaries are particularly good because they're in nice short, bite-size chunks. There's a biography of landscape gardener William Kent, too, which I keep meaning to read.
TV
I watch less and less TV. I'll turn on the news at 6pm and turn it off five minutes later. But I do enjoy Waking the Dead and love things like Miss Marple and Poirot. David Suchet is brilliant and I love the cast. But one of my favourite programmes of all time is Dinner Ladies. I think Victoria Wood is very funny indeed, and I'm a big Alan Bennett fan as well.
Radio
I listen to Radio 3 if I'm in the bath and the programme in question is palatable. I also like Classic FM apart from the ads, most of which appear to be for personal injury claims: I don't want to sue anyone. And if I'm in the car I'll listen to Radio 4 for the music and I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, which is brilliant.
Ads
I tend to go and put the kettle on when adverts come on, but I can still remember the jingle for the Robinson's Lemon Barley ad from when I was little, which is rather worrying.
New media
I don't use the internet for news but it is very useful for ordering books. My favourite site has to be www.abebooks.com, which does second-hand and out of print books |

He also fails to read Radio Times and Gardeners World magazine, despite writing for both. Maybe he just doesn't want to seem like he's promoting his own interests? |

In all fairness, the kind of person who likes the sort of thing Titch plays is more likely to enjoy R3, R4 and Classic FM these days too - I know I am! _________________ "....you're wearing a plywood bow tie with Dundee United on it?" |

Quite right mcl.
I'm sure Richard Baker did not listen to anything else on R2, maybe FNIMN would appeal to him as I think he used to introduce that years ago.

Actually I didnt realise until quite recently that Richard Baker's son, James, was controller of Sky One for a few years. I believe he started in TVam kids show, Wide awake Club, presenting alongside Timmy Mallet. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Funny you should say that, as Chris began his radio career in Manchester as an assistant to Timmy Mallet on Piccadilly Radio.
And of course Johnnie Walker got Chris his first radio job in London. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |
