Tomorrow, 23 April, is St George's Day. He is of course the patron saint of England and many other countries, but not so well known, the patron saint of Scouting. So to all English men, women & children, also all members of worldwide Scouting, a very happy St George's Day for tomorrow.

Well enjoy Highlander and seems like we need to keep our sense of humour this side of Hadrian's wall Thanks for the greeting.

I spent some of my primary school years in Scotland and we used to get St Andrew's Day off--not that you could do much in the meagre amount of daylight prevailing on 30th November!
I bet the school holiday that day bit the dust a long time ago--did it?

You're right, St Andrews day is no longer a holiday. There have been some calls to re-instate it though.

St Andrew's Day happens to be my birthday - therefore it should be celebrated!
Seriously, was today a bank holiday north of the border? Didn't seem like it driving into Glasgow on the M8 this morning at around 0730 - still plenty of traffic heading into the city from the east and south-east. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Hi Cherskiy,
When I said "this part of Scotland", just North Fife and Dundee. We must have a lot of English bank managers
Very much a local Bank holiday (these mini bank holidays are quite common up here)! _________________ Over the hill they came....the greatest Army in the World.....The Tartan Army |

I lived in Uddingston, Glasgow, at one time in the 1950s and we got holidays in May and September that other places in Scotland didn't get.
Actually, at that time quite a few places opened on Christmas Day!

Strange to hear of 'local' bank holidays - I know you have some different ones to us north of the border but I didn't know about these ones....
No argument from me about Scots hospitality, especially the further north I go - my couple of weeks in Orkney last year were made all the more enjoyable by just how warm and friendly the locals were. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I agree. I was in the highlands last year & they were very friendly. And it was even sunny! _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Yep, likewise - I spent a week flitting around NW Sutherland last June and it was lovely - even managed to camp up at Durness, near Cape Wrath, without the tent getting blown into the Atlantic Ocean! Seriously, though, if distance, lack of amenities plus single-track roads aren't a put-off, it's one of the best places in the country to visit. I absolutely love it up there. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

No Highlander it's not a bank holiday with us, nor is St David's day, 1st March or St Patrick's day, 17 March; however, I am one of these strange people that is British 1st, English 2nd and don't care about being European. So being British I think that we should have a bank holiday for 1st March, 17th March, 23rd April & 30th November, all over the UK. What say you?

I totally agree. Long live the Union!
Brought up in the Highlands buy an English mother (who is half Irish) and a Scottish father who was half Scottish, quarter English and quarter Welsh makes me a proud British Scot! _________________ Over the hill they came....the greatest Army in the World.....The Tartan Army |

Pleased that there is at least another that believes that Great Britain is great because of the union and that the sum is greater than the individual countries would be if totally devolved. We must keep our individual heritage without detracting from the power of the union of our great individual countries. My wife is 1/2 Irish, my son in law is Welsh and my grandmother was Scottish, paternal, my great grandfather was a Romany, maternal and I have a Scandinavian surname! Bit of a bar steward, but makes you a strong breed!

We may have had our ups and downs as individual countries but we will always (as long as we keep the bl**dy SNP at bay) stand together when it is needed. We are too much of a cultural mongrel for that to change now.
PS. We are just one big island after all! _________________ Over the hill they came....the greatest Army in the World.....The Tartan Army |

We have our ups and downs, but when we stand together we are unbeatable, as you say an island nation.

The Scots tell mean-spirited jokes against themselves. I don't think they're really like that at all.
But that won't stop me from re-telling of the apochryphal (spelling?) newspaper headline:
Two Taxis Collide in Aberdeen Street.
Twenty-four Passengers Injured.
