Conductor and composer Brian Fahey has died at the age of 87. In a long career his CV included five years as Shirley Bassey's musical director and nine at the helm of the BBC Scottish Radio Orchestra until its disbandment in 1981. R2 listeners will particularly remember him for his composition At the Sign of the Swinging Cymbal, various arrangements of which have introduced Pick of the Pops since the early 60s.
He had a terrible time in World War Two. Early in the war he was shot and left for dead and this was followed by a long period as a POW. Let's be thankful that he managed to rebuild his life sufficiently to enjoy such a long working time.
My sympathy to his family.
Ian. |

Oh no! One of my musical heroes, and a top arranger and bandleader. _________________ "....you're wearing a plywood bow tie with Dundee United on it?" |
