I'm sorry, but if it weren't for the lyric would anyone really have noticed this dreary song? Confused

Sorry I think it's dire, sounds like a depressing dirge to me.

My mate Geoff's a huge Rufus Wainwright fan - did you see him at The Colston Hall recently? (Rufus Wainwright I mean; not my mate Geoff!)

It's not for me to defend Rufus, he doesn't require defending, but music is about emotion and about the heart, so at times it isn't going to be all jolly, belting or dancing. Life isn't like that. This is a song about oppression, not having the freedom or liberty to be oneself, of being persecuted and condemned because of ones identity and the pain of facing the truth that it's a land you have loved that is causing you this restriction. So yes, in this respect, it is a mournful song, but it's a song of the heart, from the heart and for the heart and I guess some people just won't get that.

Yeah, I saw Rufus the last time he played the Colston Hall and I'll be seeing him there in a few weeks time, too!

Looks like you'll have plenty of company; I was in the Colston Hall booking office on Monday, buying a ticket to see Richard Thompson there in October, when the next customer was told that the Rufus Wainwright gig was sold out!

Hope you'll enjoy it, Andy - I can't say I'm aware of hearing the song this thread refers to myself.
