Glenn Roeder has resigned as manager of Newcastle United, reports Five Live.

The Magpies have had a torrid time with injuries this season, finishing 13th in the Premiership and failing to shine in the cup competitions.

Newcastle have not scored a league goal at St James' Park in over eight hours of playing time, which is their worst run since 1951.

Roeder and chairman Freddy Shepherd came under fire from fans after their home defeat by Blackburn on Saturday.

The club are yet to confirm 51-year-old Roeder's departure, although are expected to do so within hours.

Five Live's Ian Dennis said: "Roeder has resigned, walking away with immediate effect after being summoned to a hastily arranged board meeting on Sunday morning.

"It's no surprise in the north east that Sam Allardyce is already emerging as a strong favourite to replace him."

Roeder spent 15 months in charge at St James' Park including his spell as caretaker.

Sam Allardyce or Eriksson could take over?

Well, that was a story waiting to happen.... Rolling Eyes

Far better to go now than to drag things out until the end of the season, and then the club gets caught up in a race to sign someone. Hell, we'll need someone good to inspire us to take all six points off the Mackems next season! Laughing

I was in the vicinity of St James Park just after the match on Saturday. I didn't need to be told that the Toon had lost--the glum faces said it all.

I'm personally sorry that Roeder had to go but really it was inevitable.

Ian.

Keegan was the best shot we had at winning anything recently (i.e. in the last 30-odd years). We had a reasonably decent defence, some depth to the squad, outstanding wingers and proper attackers. Games were interesting - "they score three, we'll score four" (unless it was Liverpool, then it went the other way!). The manager kept the team on a fairly tight leash and there was none of the whinging and prima-donna acting going on like there is now (well, apart from Andy Cole's moaning but he got pedalled).

We even managed to get 12 points ahead in the Championship but threw it all away.

As you said, Ernie, but at least we've got the Mackems to beat next season. As long as we do that, nothing else seems to matter much! Laughing

Athole Still believes Sven-Goran Eriksson would be interested in the Newcastle managerial vacancy but admits he has yet to talk to the former England boss about the job.

The chief sports journalist in our local rag last night had both Sven and Houllier apparently making their interest known, but he still reckons Big Sam has effectively been given the job.

Sven would be perfect. Someone who would be happy with mediocre performances from his expensive players, who would have loads of pre-prepared excuses for the media, and who would draw down a huge salary despite winning nothing. He would fit right in. Laughing

I hope Sven does get the job. Then the FA can stop paying him to do nothing. (Yes, I know, that's what he did before he quit).
