The BBC has withdrawn from bidding for the rights to show Aussie soap Neighbours. This means that from next year the programme will move to either ITV or five.

I can't say I will mourn it's passing, waste of money if you ask me.

A silly move by Freemantle (Neighbours owners) - the ratings will inevitably drop, and the show could be cancelled. They're going for the quick buck rather than thinking long-term.

I'm glad the BBC didn't pay £300m for 8 years. That's extortionate, and if Grade wants to pay it for ITV he's a bigger fool than I took him for.

I dont see why ratings would inevitably drop? ITV seem to be doing ok ratings wise with their other soaps.
I'd say ITV can still make money on the show at that price. The average hour of TV would cost at least £50k-£100k in daytime anyway.

£300m/ 8 years = £37.5m per year / 50 weeks = £750k per week or £150k per day.

Still probably works out cheaper than making a show in the UK.

Isn't that the one which R2's Desmond Carrington starred in?

It's not completely inevitable, but it's most likely. They've been on a downward trend for a while now (in line with most TV) but it depends on what the BBC do now - if they drop one or both showings before ITV or Five can start theirs the momentum will be lost and the audience will drop off, just like what happened when Home And Away went to Five. There's also the fact that many of the BBC1 viewers simply don't turn over to ITV1 during daytime.

Hopefully someone will poach him. Although boiling might be a better option. Or deep frying.
