Thought last week's programme was a bit below the usual ultra-high standard--the choice of music was rather indifferent, BM seemed unusually hesitant here and there and the end was rather rushed, as it had been for a few weeks.

Happy to say that today's was right back to the usual great start to Saturday, so last week's must just have been a one-off.

I'd forgotten that most of the top DJs did label-specific shows for Radio Luxembourg as well as their shows for the Beeb. BM did Pye, David Jacobs, Alan Freeman and Pete Murray were all in evidence and Jimmy Savile presided over Decca-centred TTDC (Teen and Twenty Disc Club, part of my under-the-bedclothes staple diet). Do you remember who member no 11321 was?

Fascinating to hear the various takes of the Beatles track--fancy them getting up to take 16 on one item!

For a song that was never a huge hit, Some People was covered by an impressive roster of artistes.

I was hopeless on the Stax quiz, getting only the last one right.

Ian.

Sorry John.

My wife and I were driving back from our weekly shop at Tesco's yesterday ( I lead a very exciting life!) when I put the radio on at around 8.30am and after a little while my wife commented "the poor bloke (Brian) sounds though he has a very bad throat"-I must say I agreed with her-poor old Brian did sound rough to me.

Still a weeks rest might do him good.

Thanks Mark,

Did you ever listen to Alan Keith during his last year or two on Y100BT, the man was 94 and sounded it. Much as I loved the show and it's music the man himself was getting very difficult to listen to, but I do miss him, and I miss Richard Baker too, I've given up on Titchmarsh for a while.

Richard Baker must be knocking on a bit now, but it's amazing how his voice doesn't seem to have aged at all - it still sounds just like it did in his newsreading days. I assume he's more or less retired now?

It's fascinating hearing how different Brian Matthew used to sound in the 60s, with his fake posh accent that occasionally used to slip into his more natural voice during interviews - I'd be hard pushed to recognise him!

BM sounds absolutely fine to me and I hope he won't be discouraged from staying on SOTS for a long time to come.

His home town is Coventry but I must admit that you'd be hard put to it to identify any particular accent now.

By the way--Elvis Presley was the person always referred to as member no 11321 on TTDC--see above.

Meant to add that I've sent in a request to SOTS for Sat 16 June, to mark Mrs W's Master's degree ceremony at the Gateshead Sage later that day (you can tell which of us has the brains) and our 30th wedding anniversary two days later.

Here's hoping!

A deserving case, if ever I heard one!

Heard most of Saturday's show. The (by now) customary heavy quota of less familiar tracks, which is fine by me although I know some are less keen.

Interesting to hear the early recording of Got My Mind Set On You - can't remember now who it was (they've put George's name on the show listing, and not even allmusic has anything else other than the writer, Rudy Clark).

It was James Ray, from 1962

Must remember to listen to SOTS on Listen Again this week because for once I missed all but the very first record.

This was due to my attendance at a certain event at a hotel in Brian's native-and I believe John W's home-city of Coventry.

I was actually at an event called "Asylum" at the Leofric Hotel in the city which celebrated Smallville and Supernatural and if anyone round the centre of Coventry was at any time deafened by sudden bursts of very loud screaming and applause, they marked the appearances at the event of the Supernatural star Jensen Ackles!

It was a great event, it's a nice hotel too.Just meant that due to breakfast arrangements I missed most of SOTS but I will catch up with it later on.

Also going to see The Zombies tomorrow night.I expect the screaming there to be a bit quieter!

I swear 'Some People' was also the inspiration, tunewise, for 'Let's Have A Look At It Now' (the closing theme song to The Smell Of Reeves & Mortimer)!

Does anyone else think Karl Denver was also the inspiration for the Pub Singer round on Shooting Stars? Listen to him singing the 'Side By Side' theme song on the A-Z of The Beatles (19 May, when 'I'll Be On My Way' was on).
