The BBC press release says:

Wi-fi networks in schools can give off three times the height of the signal radiation of phone masts, a BBC Panorama investigation has discovered.

The Chairman of the Health Protection Agency, Sir William Stewart, calls for a review of the health effects of wi-fi in the programme, to be broadcast tonight on BBC One.

Current Government advice – from a report published by Sir William in 2000 – recommends that phone masts are not sited near schools, without consultation with parents and the school, because children are thought to be more vulnerable to radio frequency radiation emissions than adults.

Panorama visited a comprehensive school in Norwich and measured the radiation signal strength from a classroom wi-fi enabled laptop.

The programme found the height of the signal strength was three-times higher than the height of the signal strength of a typical phone mast.

===================
I think Panorama is just scare mongering and are guilty of bad science. The "facts" they claim are mostly rubbish & down to a mis-interpretation of the data.

Here's an article refuting Panorama's claims:
http://media.guardian.co.uk/broadcast/story/0,,2084219,00.html

The Health Protection Agency says a person sitting within a Wi-Fi hotspot for a year receives the same dose of radio waves as a person using a mobile phone for 20 minutes.

It's not bad when you can use EVERY news bulletin for the previous 24 hours to trail the programme.

With last weeks screaming reporter & this weeks bad science, its beginning to resemble the Jeremy Vine radio show more & more. How long before they rename it "Tonight with Jeremy Vine"?

ITV gave up on good current affairs years ago when 'This week' was dropped, now it's Trevor MacDonald and the flavour of the week.

There's nothing to keep Panorama honest any more.

It is against the 2nd edition of Corrie and thus it needs all the help it can get.

For all the scaremongering and hype, these shows do quite poorly.

On ITV, the first Corrie starts late and the second starts early - thus artificially increasing Sir Trev's overnight ratings, and denting Eastenders in the process. As a response, EE usually starts late, which means they lose ratings slightly but Panorama gets a boost. Then 6m tune in early for New Tricks and again boost the average. So there's only about 2 or 3 million watching but the next day they can boast of 4 or 5m. The figures are corrected a week later, but it doesn't matter by then.

The start times are driven by advertising rules. ITV can show up to 12 minutes advertising per hour so naturally they put it in the middle of high rating shows (eg Coronation Street) and none in shows like Tonight that get low ratings. Its just commercial sense to do this.

Oh yeah, I know about the scheduling of adverts (I think they can arrange them how they want in primetime, they're not limited to minutes-per-hour) but ITV are very clever at scheduling to get big attention-grabbing overnight ratings.

They are limited to 40 minutes between 6-11pm which they can show up to 12 minutes in any one hour, so I suspect the overruns are mainly to maximise ad time in the given hour. ITV earns something like 60% odf their revenue from just 3 shows (Coronation Street, Emmerdale & X Factor). The competition with the BBC is a bit false these days. It gets bragging rights in the papers but ITV's business model is really based upon their share of commercial airtime, so the real competition is with Channel 4, five and digital.

True, Geddon, but they've got to try and entice viewers somehow to what has largely become a travesty.

I watched the show & it was a load of rubbish to be honest. They neglected to say that the people who emit the strongest radio fields in the Uk are the ones who run the TV and radio transmission network. Rolling Eyes I wonder why? Maybe Jeremy would like to do his bit by turning off the transmitters between 12 & 2 pm each day? Laughing
