I like much of R2's input as background music but now really regard only SOTS and, to some extent, Desmond Carrington as absolute musts.

That list also used to include 100 Best Tunes, Stewpot and all programmes hosted by Roger Royle--no more.

It's much the same on R3 since Brian Kay's programme was axed.

Where are the new musts?

Ian.

On the web. Radio as we have known it is old hat, and these days Radio 2 is proof of that.

The Must-Hears (apart from SOTS, the specialist, or other programmes deemed of minority interest, such as Desmond Carrington or David Jacobs), are steadily being elbowed out in favour of the general, homogenous, background-listening sort that we get during the day (I'm alluding to the carbunkle that is Radcliffe & Maconie in particular here).

I don't get to listen to radio in the evening very often as the family prefers the haunted fishtank (and I'm not that happy listening on headphones) so I'm not really in a very good position to complain about the demise of such programming, but I do fear for the day in the not-too-distant future, when DC, DJ (and, come to that, Bob Harris and Michael Parkinson) decide to call it a day. It would be a terrible shame if Radio 2 were to end up, like most commercial stations and Radio 1, just splitting the day into 2-3 hour chunks, one little different from the other.

He's not exactly a Must-Hear, but I do like, now and again, to listen to Iain Anderson's late night show on BBC Radio Scotland. You have to get used to the fact he tends to mumble into his beard a bit (even more than Bob in his Whistle Test days), but he does play a great range of music in the folk/blues/country/Scottish areas.
