Terry celebrates his new contract by taking a holiday Laughing

According to the radio times website (so don't shoot me if it's wrong!) Johnnie is sitting in for Terry on May 14th, I'm assuming he is doing the whole week but only Monday is visible at the moment.

Zzzzz... So I guess from today's news we're gonna have to wait at least another year and a half before they start experimenting with some dynamic breakfast stand-ins.

Why do we need someone 'dynamic' first thing in the morning, personally I think Johnnie is the perfect stand in for Terry.

I for one don't need " Dynamic" at Breakfast. All I want is for someone to help me set the autopilot, and ease me down the M62 until about 8:00 am, by which time I might have woken up.

Yeah, and that's fine, but occasionally there are some of us who wouldn't mind something a bit more fresh and creative tried out in the breakfast slot for a change. Using Johnnie Walker all the time isn't going to help a smooth breakfast evolution when Wogan does eventually decide to step down. (Or doesn't have his contract renewed, as I strongly suspect will eventually happen at this rate)

By all means have your Johnnie W, but let's have Dame Edna or Paul O'Grady or Danny Baker for a week each!

Errr no, lets not Rolling Eyes
Actually I like Paul O'Grady but wouldn't want him on the breakfast show, as for Dame Edna, I assume that is a joke.

Anyway, nothing is going to change, Terry has signed his new contract so we know that he won't be going anywhere for a long time yet so long as he is in good health.

Johnnie Walker or Richard Allinson at breakfast would always be ok with me rather than some loud idiot who takes delight in hitting me around the ear drums first thing.

And I think Paul OGrady is much better on the telly than radio.

Lady B: This obsession with Danny B seems to be bordering on the unhealthy.

As for Paul O'Grady he'd break my telly if he sat on it.

Personally, I'd prefer RA to JW, but like Fred I like to be eased into the day.

Weeell, it's more an obsession with fresh, creative, unpredictable radio really, of which Mr. Baker is in a minority of such exponents.

They are not exactly the future though are they. Dame Edna is 5 years older than Terry Crying or Very sad and O'Grady is just a loud bang away from another heart attack. Shocked

That leaves Danny Baker as the sole choice.

I sense a cunning plan being devised by Lady B..... Laughing Laughing

I don't see what's wrong with Johnnie Walker at breakfast - he seems to get on well with traffic reporters and news readers and the show works well.

I think Johnnie is good at getting most of the staff on duty involved with the show. It's what a breakfast show should sound like...Terry is doing this, but he's been advised too.

I don't expect this to be entertained for one moment as a serious suggestion, but Dame Edna would be great - I was at the recording of The Dame Edna Treatment a couple of weeks back, and realised just how much of a genius Barry Humphries is.

Actually, let's have Sir Les Patterson on drivetime too!

I have never found Dame Edna funny so if 'she' ever turned up on the radio I would be reaching for the off button pretty sharpish.

Les Paterson at drivetime. Now`that WOULD encourage me to listen again at 5.05pm instead of the dross alternative!

Can't say I ever found Barry Humphries funny in any of his incarnations, so I'd be reaching for the sick bag as well as the 'off' button.

The latter would be true of O'Grady too - his voice to me is the radio equivalent of dragging a nail down a blackboard.... Sad

Well compared to the Internet Radio I hear, Baker is about as 'fresh' as Workers Playtime or ITMA!

One more roll-call and it's Humberside for 15 minutes.

Toggy, I don't think the purpose is to be funny. I think it achieves several things:
  • It creates an informal atmosphere quickly.
  • It makes Johnnie seem more modest and thus approachable.
  • It makes the staff feel more valued.
  • Ok, some of it makes me smile, sometimes laugh...
Since the basis of the daytime Radio 2 shows is putting a personality across, I see the acknowledgement of the team as just part of Johnnie's personality. He wants us to know that it's not just him - and I like that. Builds the nice guy image. Plus, he'a having fun, and it's infectious.

Rob.

But why bother everyday, surely his 'staff' are the same all the time, it just seems pointless to me

And is it me or does Deadly go completely hyper when Johnnie is on, I know he's not exactly shy and retiring but blimey! Laughing

I cannot see why Johnnie doing his customary roll call should be a problem for anyone. All he is doing is engaging the rest of the team in the programme. other presenters do it various ways. Why not?

It's not a problem exactly but it all seems rather pointless when it's the same people everyday.

The listeners love the music and he plays it for them.
