It's unclear when the video was shot. It does look like he was told what to say.

John Mcarthy was held for even longer than Terry Waite and during that time there were no videos or photographs released by their kidnappers.

Rumour is that he was very lax with his personal security and had been warned about it previously but ignored the advice. still it looks like he is not suffering too much.
