Mutya Buena, Gareth Gates, Will Young, Rihanna, Enrique Iglesias, Natasha Bedingfield etc etc etc.
Who the hell is picking this music? Its all so predictable now,I honestly thought Radio 2 was for adults, but the music during the daytime seems to be exclusively for 8 to 14 year old girls. And they are at school
Is it worth complaining to Lesley Douglas? Or should I complain to a higher person to get my voice heard.
We are having a vote at work on whether to change stations after 20 years of listening and I really feel sad about that, after being such a massive fan of Radio 2 for all these years(I'm now 39)

SW played something this afternoon which made me think I was listening to R1 or Galaxy FM for a few seconds. Not what I'd expect from R2 airplay at all. For the life of me I can't remember what it was, apart from that it was cr*p.... Laughing

(NB: Cherskiy is only 40 years old....!)

I know exactly which song you mean Cherskiy, though like you I don't know or don't want to know what it was either.
Going back to the original point, if they must have a playlist(which I am totally opposed to) why can't they have some songs in there from a different source.
Maybe one picked by Bob Harris, one picked by Parky etc to go along with the rest of them.
Just something to break the monotony of the ex boyband member, ex girlband member, pop idol winner, pop idol runner up, coldplayesque band dominated playlist that now pervades RADIO 2.

Fair idea, gazmando.

Back to the offshore pirate days, when every DJ had a Record Of The Week (rather than just Ken Bruce & Janice Long now) which got played frequently. The temptation would, of course, be for the daytime presenters to pick standard playlist stuff, but if the likes of Parky, Lamacq and Harris were included that should provide some welcome variety.

yes, this is a sad situation Gaz.

I haven't posted here for a week. basically 'cos I've had nothing to say. Not listened much last week or this (except RA...but I don't want to start another RA thread!!)

My feeling on R2 have been posted on John's thread about the 40th Anniversary.

Steve Wright is the worst offender - he plays lots of kiddie tracks that no-one else on the station plays. I can only assume that a) he think it makes him seem trendy, and b) his audience is mostly kids.

But, yes, generally I am surprised by the limited playlist and that half of them seem unsuited to Radio 2. I personally like hearing new music and am keen to hear a wide range of stuff throughout the day but the new stuff from Gareth Gates and Enrique Iglesias (for example) is just terrible and I don't understand why anyone would programme it for a supposedly adult station.

Even if those choices can be justified, there's still no reason to play them all the sodding time.

He played it again this afternoon.... question is, why was I listening again today? Oh, yes, trapped in a car with someone else driving!

"Sonny Jim", I think it was called. Complete and utter b*llocks, in other words.

Thanks everyone for the replies, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who despairs at the music now.
Look at today for example on the Steve Wright show|- Beyonce followed by Rhianna followed by Christine Aguilera followed by Unklejam(whoever that is)
Am I now listening to Kiss fm or Radio 2 it really is getting ludicrous, and Radio 2 needs to take a step back or it will appeal to no one.
PS thanks Andy for mentioning the 40th anniversary thread, I hadn't looked at it(enjoyed ALL the posts)

No ernie the thread is about "nothing to listen to", I simply made the statement that I had found something to listen to on R2 and that it was SM. Seems one has a complex about people griping on the "gripes about shows and music" thread, if it is directed at the ginger whinger. Wink

I agree with you about Mutya Buena and Enrique Iglesias. I haven't heard anyone play Suzanne Vega's 'Frank & Ava' during general daytime slots, by the way, just on the Radcliffe & Maconie show.

The aforementioned is what you expect from local stations.

Hi pickle, pleased someone else listens to the "Likely lads", I find they play some excellent music, some pants as well though, IMHO, but you can't please all the people all of the time and on the whole I enjoy their show and "laddish" banter. We do seem to get too much off the current play list during the day, although I have enjoyed SM on Drivetime this last week and what I have heard I thought was fairly eclectic and much to my taste.

To be fair, I've heard it played by Ken, Terry and Chris. It was at that point I realised it was a new song!

I've heard it loads of times and I've not listenend to Radcliffe and Maconie at all as it's not 'radio time' for me.
