Hundreds of jobs across the BBC's news teams are set to be axed to save money, it emerged last night.
Newsnight and the 10 o'clock News are just two out of a range of news programmes which are likely to lose staff.
These potential redundancies will help the BBC meet a Government demands that it slash its news budget by five per cent a year for fives years.
Journalists within the corporation believe the News 24 service is likely to become the main news provider with the identities of separate news programmes being lost.
They are also fearful that the cuts will threaten the BBC's website, which has become one of the most popular across the world.
A round of voluntary redundancies involving 3,800 workers has only recently come to an end and unions fear the effects of further cuts.
BBC News employs 2,000 journalists and has a £90million budget, covering everything from Radio One to the World Service.
A spokesman for the BBC said: "This is still a work in progress."

I see that the Daily Wail is stirring up anti-BBC feeling yet again. Much of this is speculation - further propogated by trash newspapers like the wail.
And yes, Ernie, you are right. Boggy was not a news journalist but one of the strange Reithian BBC things called Announcers. How long will they last I wonder? |

Its not speculation. And no amount of blaming the daily Mail is going to change things.
The facts are that the licence fee settlement will not cover their expected costs for the next number of years. This is made worse by the fact that the BBC has entered into a number of very costly (and perhaps over priced) long term contracts which it can't exit from such as the technology outsourcing & sports rights.
Therefore the areas where they can cut spending are much smaller than the overall budget. An example if you need to cut your overall budget by 5% but 1/2 of your budget is already committed to long term contracts, then you need to cut the other 1/2 by 10% _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I am sure you are right, but this does not escape the fact that the daily mail has been committed to bashing the BBC for years and years for what appears to be any reason it can think of.
We should not forget the fact that since the inception of ITV in 1955, major newspaper publishers have had a sizeable vested interest in those companies and have launched attacks on the BBC in order to protect the financial interests of their proprietors.
It cannot be pleasing for them to face up to the fact that the BBC has been increasing its viewer share at a time when ITV PLC has had some major financial and popularity problems due to.... er..... crap leadership and programming.
That is why the Mail will pick up and run with any story that paints a negative picture of the BBC and its activities. |

fred,
you really need to give this conspiracy stuff a rest. The BBC is a £3bn business and should not be beyond criticism. I sense there is some BBC old boys who seem to think that whatever the BBC does is ok, even if it does waste huge amounts of money. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I disagree. Thatcher adopted an anti-BBC stance because she knew that she had some key newspaper proprietors on her side. The situation hasn't changed much.

First and foremost it's a Public Service Broadcaster with a unique remit. It is not primarily a business, even if it has a commercial arm whose role is to sell BBC output and expertise to external markets.

There are certainly lots of ex-BBC people around who are aware that the corporation has been ripped apart by meddling politicians and men in grey suits who make programming decisions with no experience whatever of broadcasting. They'll tell you that the BBC doesn't waste anywhere near as much as the right-wing tabloid newspaper proprietors would like people to believe.
In many departments, things have been cut to the bone and can't really be cut any more. Don't ask me how I know.... I just do. |

I love Firewire Fred's description of ITV's poor performance! If the Daily Wail are holding up the likes of Britain's Got Talent as great TV, they must be pretty deluded. _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.

How come? I worked for the BBC for 16 years - 10 years on the payroll and then 6 years on rolling short-term contracts (of the sort that's all too common now). I pity the young folks trying to get a mortgage when they're working on 6 month contracts. Thanks Maggie. |
