Didn't post anything last week as I heard only part of the show. Back to normal today.
Loved the Brian Hyland car song (son of bikini?) Mrs W's first car was a bit like that!
Like I'll Follow the Sun but overall Beatles for Sale never quite grabbed me like the other early Beatles LPs.
Good to hear Our Favourite Melodies but Craig Douglas' version is one of my special favourites and I hope they get round to playing that account some day soon.
The Yardbirds are always welcome--one of theirs that I like is Happenings Ten Years Time Ago, a tiny hit in 66. Worth a spin sometime.
A really obscure 3 in a row this week!
Away next weekend so may hear the programme in fragments. Here's hoping they manage to include my request for 16 June.

What's with this new obsession of how much vinyl copies now sell for,is it because the new producer's a collector? _________________ The wheel keeps on turning...

I think it must be Fog! I'm afraid SOTS does nothing for me at all these days.
It saddens me to say it but it's awful. Why change something which wasn't broke? Apparently there is more to come according to Brian.
Apart from the Beatles track nothing much jumped out at me. I wish they'd stop playing alternate versions. I'd have much preferred B Bumble and the Stinger's Nut Rocker.

I've got to admit that I'm enjoying it less now Helen, there seems to be a lot more early 60's tracks played these days and unfortunatley they do little for me. _________________ The wheel keeps on turning...

There are a few that I like but not that many. I thought today's very poor.

Brian said that Phil Swern who does POTP is the new producer.
I wonder if more subtle changes will be introduced? _________________ The Voice of reason in a MAD MAD world |

I must say that the Phil Swern production job is not as good as the Roger Bowman shows. Bowman seems to have a much better insight into the period and a better musical knowledge. Even Brian Matthew is not sounding like he enjoys doing it as much anymore - but perhaps that is more to do with his recent illness. |

Having been away, I didn't hear this week's, but the tracklisting looks interesting, and, hey, it must have been good to hear a different reading of Nut Rocker just for once.
I have to say I like the current mix with its accent on the less familiar, particularly at a weekend when POTP features a 60s chart. Although I have a lot of 60s records, bought either then with hard-earned pocket money or since on compilations, they are mostly of the well-known mainstream and it's nice to hear material of a lesser kind, from someone with apparently deeper pockets than mine. I did also like Roger Bowman's selections though, and perhaps his shows had more cohesion and easy flow about them. _________________ Ron |

As a consistent supporter of SOTS, especially under BM's stewardship, I've been reflecting on the above comments.
I like some of the changes, such as the proposed Playing Hard to Get feature, and you're bound not to stand still when you get a change of producer. However, I think there's too much reliance on the US charts now and still don't understand why they're tinkering around with the competitions.
BM is still as consummate a professional as ever and I'd be really concerned if he weren't enjoying presenting the show any more, lest he were to decide that enough was enough.
It would take something pretty seismic to make me stop listening but I hope the BBC isn't taking good audience figures for granted.

Hello H and everyone. I heard a story about a 'version' of B Bumble and The Stingers who played the Cavern in the sixties. They had to use the old piano that was there and it sounded dreadful! They did about six tunes and each one sounded the same!
One of the best acts I saw at the Cavern was 'Shane Fenton and The Fentones.' When The Fentones did their instrumental numbers (The Breeze and I, The Mexican etc) in that confined space the atmosphere was fantastic! I still remember it as a highlight of those days!
Judging by the comments here SOTS may have taken a Swern for the worse! OUCH! |

I listened today to last saturday's sots and I noticed how BM is now making mention of the collector's value of some records. What the hell is this - Sixties Antiques Roadshow? We will be having Guess The Value of This Record competitions soon. |

I don't know. I can't have a week in hospital without things being mucked up.
What happened to Roger Bowman? And why the obsession with how much these tracks go for? Is it me or is there a lot of airtime being given to the more obscure American groups. They see to dominate the programme _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

I can't see what all the fuss is about? SOTS is still a "must listen to or record for later" in my books and long may it run!.
Maybe it's me but I've noticed many Radio 2 things which I normally wouldn't have done unless folks hadn't mentioned them on these boards.
I thought Saturday's show was great as usual and I don't mind hearing some alternative or American recordings. I remember recently, posters saying lets have more obscure tracks rather than the standards...
Also the mention of record values, no big deal, it's interesting.
But didn't I hear Brian refer to "Phil, the collector, Swern" this Saturday? |

I think you did, or it might have been last week.
It's not a must listen for me anymore though. There's just something missing???
