Is anyone else watching Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain, shwoing at 9pm on Tuesdays on BBC2?
I've got completely hooked on it. This week's episode, the second out of five, reviewed the period between 1955 and 1964. It considered at some length Suez, Polaris, the Profumo affair and our initial failure to secure membership of the Common Market and briefly added some other aspects. And there was a fair sprinking of Marr bon mots, too.
Can't wait to see what he makes of Harold Wilson and co in the next episode.

It was jolly interesting, although just a quick skim over the surface of most of the events, it was good to see what was going on just before I was born. The next episode covers my early years( well not mine) but what was going on while I was young. It might just answer a few questions and jog a memory or two. |

Last nights episode makes you realise how good things are at the moment by comparison. Still people are quick to forget & take bthings for granted. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Marr was a bit churlish about the 80's last night. Obviously as an ex-editor of the Independent he would be challenged in giving an impartial view of the period. However his closing monologue did at least convey the truth that Britain changed dramatically in the 1980's and that in terms of post WW2 history the years can be divided roughly into 45-83 and post 83 and that the way we live today was basically moulded in the 80's. For all her critics nobody has remotely come close to receiving any mandate from the electorate since 1990 for reversing the changes Thatcher made in the way the country is run. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

The trouble is that a lot of employers paid their employees for a 3-day week, and when people realised that the bills still had to paid the novelty soon wore off.

I'm not. The memories are still very real. I think I'll do something less depressing than watch that programme. |

I'm not old. I'm not a "lovie" (whatever that is) and I'm not a member of the Labour Party.
Hope that helps. Next question? |
