Johnny Vaughan's Capital Radio breakfast programme is being extended by an hour using recorded highlights from the previous day's show.

Vaughan, whose show currently runs between 6am and 9am, will go on air an hour later at 7am and stay on until 10am.

The first hour, between 6am and 7am, will "showcase the best of the previous day's show interspersed with regular, up-to-the minute live news, traffic and travel", said Capital today.

Vaughan has the number one breakfast show in London - but he is only ahead of Heart's Jamie Theakston and Harriet Scott by a whisker.

The Capital DJ had 854,000 weekly listeners in the first three months of this year, against Heart's 825,000.

The schedule shakeup means Capital will be putting out recorded highlights of Vaughan against the first hour of Theakston and Scott, who are live on air between 6am and 9am.

The Capital programme director, Scott Muller, said: "This change means that Londoners will be able to enjoy Johnny Vaughan in the morning at whatever time they get up or travel to work, and by incorporating the 9am to 10am hour we aim to drive listening and consolidate our position as London's number one commercial breakfast show."

Capital morning DJ James Cannon moves an hour later to 10am, with his "flirty at 9.30am" slot also moving back an hour. In overall audience terms, GCap-owned Capital remains in third place in London with 1.62 million listeners. Magic is number one ahead of second-placed Heart.

Tarrant used to pre-record his show after Richard Allinson between 6.6.30am.

I have never liked these early morning pre-records. It shows disrespect to early risers. Better off to employ an up and coming presenter & break them in on early breakfast.

Yeah right. Another desperate measure on the part of GCap to impose cost-cutting measures on its franchises. For "showcase the best of" substitute "repeating whole chunks in order to save money on presenters".

Is any IR station worth listening to these days? GCap is the MacDonald's of the radio world- you know exactly what you're gonna get before you enter, and it's formulaic, bland, ear-fodder!

I don't believe there is. Time was when Capital Radio was worth listening to. When I worked at a firm in Bracknell Berks, Capital Radio was piped through the factory tannoy system for a few hours in the morning and again in the afternoon and it was great. Michael Aspel in the morning and Roger Scott in the afternoon. This goes back to late 1970s-early 1980s. I can certainly remember hearing an eclectic mix of music on Roger Scott's show.

It depends what you want. I listen to in no particular order......... classic fm, the jazz, capital gold, smooth ocassionally, and used to listen to 3C. I also listen to some of the smaller locals from time to time such as Downtown when in Belfast.

This is a good thread re subject matter under discussion.

Because I find the Radio 2 day time schedules/presenters not to my taste I have been dancing around the dial these past few months trying to find something I really like/enjoy.

My dial has settled on Virgin radio in the daytime-I have to say I really like the Russ Williams and Suggs shows-they play my kind of music with good sensible comments on the artists/records etc.

I try when I am able (work permitting) to listen live to BFBS Radio 2 for the Richard Allinson show 9-11am or when I can't tune in later in the day at home via the Listen Again feature. However on weekdays Virgin radio imho delivers good quality music led shows.

I do enjoy Suggs show when I get the chance to listen. He really makes the afternoon fly unlike a certain other show which seems to drag on forever.

I don't know why Capital are bothering with repeats - Vaughan's got more time on hands now he's been sacked by The Sun! Laughing
