Is anyone else getting worried by the music on Terry's show now.
The music on Terry's show when Pauly was with him always used to be my favourite, but now I feel it's become really bland.
With Pauly you used to get Jerry Lee Lewis, The Moody Blues, Bob Dylan, Buddy Holly, Matt Monro, various country artists etc.
Also Pauly found Eva Cassidy, Katie Melua Mke Silver etc. I know they're not to everyones taste but they were something different to what you'd hear on every other station.
Now Alan Boyds(am I right?) in charge of the music it's all Avril Lavigne, Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson, Enrique Iglesias etc.
Maybe some people like that sort of stuff but Terry's listeners are supposed to be Togs, and at 40 myself I can say that none of that sort of stuff appeals to me in the slightest.
Where did Boyd actually come from? I'm guessing commercial radio.

I have noticed a bit of a change towards more contemporary artists - if I wanted to listen to these, I'd tune into KB or SW. One of the joys of Pauly being at the helm was the amount of new artists I 'discovered' (yes, it does happen beyond the Bob Harris Show!) - Tift Merritt and Juliet Turner being two that spring to mind. Sadly, I'm resolved now to not hearing the likes of "Dr Fell" by the latter any more, she clearly doesn't sound enough like Gwen Stefani or Natasha Bedingfield for Barrowlands.

Yes, with many years of experience as it happens. Just face it folks the music has changed Pauly is sadly no longer with us it won't go back to how it was when he was here. I'm sure we've had this conversation before, or was that on another forum *TOG alert* Laughing

Is he the same Alan Boyd who produced Blankety Blank (with a certain M.T. Wogan as presenter) and the Generation Game, and tried to lure Wogan to LWT to do Game For A Laugh in the early 80s?

I admit that things change but that doesn't mean that things have to turn into exactly the same as everything else.
Thats just a cop out phrase that you could use for everything but it doesn't mean it's right.

I have noticed a change, not been able to put my finger on exactly what is different, musically, but still find there is a fair cross section and he played that wonderful Eva Cassidy version of Gordon Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain, this morning. Very apt as I was servicing at a farm and watching the Dominies from Cranwell bursting through the cloud and rain and bringing back memories of working on them in a different life.

Just to add that although Alan does tend to pick more modern music I think there are still good choices, I like the 80's tracks he slots in and at least he hasn't chosen that umbrella thing yet Laughing
I think he usually makes good choices after the pause for thought slot too.

Agree about that awful umbrella song Toggy, and Tel still plays some wonderful tracks that you don't seem to hear elswhere.

Definitely think there's been a downward trend in the music choices lately.
As Cherskiy says the more modern stuff is better suited to Ken's show.
But I think there's even getting to be a bit of a problem with the oldies now, there seems to be little variety...always the same old favourites....the artists featured are fine but does it always have to be the same tracks that are played. At times it seems as though there's little thought put into the selection at all.
I know we were spoilt for years with Pauley's picks but maybe a new producer is needed. Crying or Very sad

Hi Gaz,

Yes, I mentioned this a while back - it changes the whole feel of the show. I used to love hearing Moody Blues, Carpenters and the like on the way to work.

Now, it's classic fm, quiet a bit actually especially on driveltime.

Well...

As a young 'un (32) I think the music under Boyd is far more interesting than under Pauly. There's a lot more variety, a good mix, and you tend not to get the same few records coming round on an almost daily basis (eg Fats Domino, Brown Eyed Girl).

This always seems to happen after I moan, but I enjoyed the music this morning as it didn't just stick to the playlist(YUCK) stuff.
Also Ken played a good variety today.

Sorry I'm late in replying here. A day or so after I read the opening post, with which I agree, the music was noticeably better and I wondered has someone been reading this??

I've got so say the music in general is not as good on R2 at the moment and to me it has lost it's sparkle all round.

Sorry if I seem to be continually on a downer here but for me it's not the station it was. Sad

Helen, I think most people are starting to feel that way. I'm finding much of the daytime output passing me by. Let's hope the Channel 4 challenge will get them to raise their game!

I quite agree. Standards are going down very quickly and I just don't listen to much now. I wonder if Ms. Douglas is yet aware that there's a big iceberg in front of the ship....

Well given that this http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/news/2007/07/nr_20070706 is all the 'channel 4 challenge' has to offer I doubt anybody is bothered by it.

Sorry but I can't see anything wrong with radio 2 during the week (daytime) I rarely listen at weekends but you have to cater for all tastes.

It's not what it used to be though Toggy, and I'm talking 2 or 3 years ago not 10 or 20.

Nothing is what is used to be though is it? look at BBC1 full of soap operas, cookery shows and poor drama. BBC2 apart from the odd thing full of fly-on the wall lifestyle shows.

You can't really compare the 2 mediums. The music that is missing is still there waiting to be played, not everyday but more than once in a blue moon!

Think you're dead right there H, the recent decline has become very noticeable. They say the listening figures are improving but I think that's more to do with the dross that's available elsewhere rather than Radio 2's output.

I know I'm getting more selective these days - at one time R2 was on pretty much every hour I was in the house (SW, CE, JR and RB excepted, of course). Nowadays I'm lucky if I catch half of what I used to listen to each week.

I just cannot believe that Wogan is playing "Are you ready for love" by Elton John!!! Rolling Eyes Say what you like, Elton has produced some good stuff over the years, especially in the 70's, but this is trash, and is the one track that seems to get played ! Why?

This was originally recorded by Elton in the 1970's. 1977 if I remember correctly.

I know it was re-recorded in the last few years, Ernie, it's still trash! Think the original was more like 1979.

It wasn't rerecorded - it was rereleased, and is one of Elton's very few UK Number 1 singles. It was popular enough to reach the top of the charts, so I guess it's popular enough to be played on Wogan's show even though you don't like it.

All I meant was, of the huge cannon of work that Elton has produced, this is the one that is constantly played. Why not give some of the others an airing, for the sake of variety?

BTW, I'm fairly sure that the version that became a hit isn't the same as the original recording, but as I don't posses either, I can't be sure!!

Helen, I'm afraid that saying "Ready for love" is better than some of the current playlist is damning with very faint praise Smile

It is played because it is catchy and people like it. Rolling Eyes By the way Crocodile Rock was played on WUTW last week so other Elton songs do get an airing.

It's almost the same recording, but the original 45 has some extra instrumental passages that were snipped out of the rerelease.

On its original issue, 'Are You Ready' was something of a disaster for little Reg - just goes to show the power of putting a song on an advert, really!
