BBC One is to launch a new nightly news bulletin to bridge the gap between the Six and 10 O'Clock News programmes.

The short summary will go out on weekdays at 8pm. A presenter has not yet been named but Natasha Kaplinsky took part in a trial in the Midlands.

It will be the first BBC bulletin to be introduced since the Six O'Clock News began in 1984.

Channel controller Peter Fincham said he was "keen to bring younger audiences to the news".

He said one of the consequences of moving the 9 O'Clock News to an hour later in 2000 was that there was a large gap between bulletins.

These 'reasons' are all total b@llocks. Why do people try and re-invent stuff??? Today's 'Younger' audiences have Sky/digital channels so have 15min bulletins every 15min on demand, if they need it, so why have so much news on terrestial, anyway when I were young it was a relief not having news between 6 and 10 on ITV and I'm sure a lot of young folk now feel the same.

I wonder if Lesley Douglas will drag the news bulletins on BBC Radio 2 into the 21st century following the led set by BBC One.

For example on Virgin, Heart hourly news bulletins last for about 90 seconds tops-on Radio 2 we get the full 5 minutes. Why?

If people want "News" go to Radio 4, Sky News, vupteen other radio/TV stations etc-no need for great long news bulletins on Radio 2 imho.

No, I like the length of the present radio 2 news slots. It's only 5 minutes for heavens sake. Rolling Eyes

By the way tuning to BBC3 is not a option for everyone is it. I don't mind the idea of an 8pm summary even though the reasons they give for introducing it are a bit daft.

5 minutes news PLUS 2 lots of traffic bulletins per hour, plus however many adverts for forthcoming programmes-not much time to actually play any music really is there.

How many records do we get these days per hour on Radio 2?

Well in terms of the "younger" viewers they are hoping to attract by doing this I'm sure a large number will have Freeview

How much news will there be in these 90 second updates? It's yet more soundbites. Its a sad day when the most in dept TV news & documentary programmes are not screened by the BBC.
