Very intersting article in the Times today about Hitler's record collection that has turned up in the attic of a dead Russian soldier.
According to the paper his top 5 favourites were
1-Piano sonatas, Opus 78 and 90 -Beethoven
2-Wagner's overture to the Flying Dutchman by the Bayreuth Orchestre conducted by Heinz Tietjen
3-Russian airas, including the death in Boris Godunov, by Mussorgsky, sung by the Russian bass Fyodor Shalyapin
4-Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, with the Berlin State Opera Orchestra, soloist Bronislaw Huberman
5-Mozart Piano Sonata No 8 in A minor with Artur Schnabel. |

It was always assumed that he was inspired by Wagner because of the racist Aryian undertones that could be taken from his music, but some of these choices are a surprise.
By the way, when did Sue Lawley sit down and record this Desert Island Discs show with him? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

That's very surprising as both Schnabel and Huberman were Polish Jews, and Huberman was an active anti-Nazi in the 1930's including his forming the “Association of Friends of the Palestine Orchestra.”
Is there an internet link to the news about this collection?
