Jamaica is bracing for what could be a devastating storm as Hurricane Dean blows in from the Caribbean Sea.

The island sits right in Dean's path and meteorologists warn the storm could have "potentially catastrophic" results, dumping 20in (50cm) of rain.

That bit I dont get. Is it landing in Jamacia? If there is a storm, wouldnt space be the safest place to stay until after the storm has passed?

Actually you get good weather once a hurrincane has been through!

We were in Florida when one threatened and we had to evacuate inland. We were able to go back 2 days later as it altered course, but the weather was fantastic afterwards. The beach's appearance was completely changed by the surging tides though. Enormous shells washed up as well.

I think the shuttle is comong home early in case Dean winds it's way up the Mexican coast and gets close to Houston. Yeah I know the shuttle isn't landing in Texas but the control centre is there.

I'm smug with the missus right now, I persuaded her we didn't want a holiday in Jamaica this year (she has family there) and I got the choice and we went to Dublin last week, great weather last week, now look at it

Did they name the storm after Howard Dean?

Because the weather system is affecting the whole of central america and will affect the approach into Edwards airforce base. Don't forget that the shuttle is effectively a glider and largely unmanoueverable.

For 'largely' read 'very' - it's apparently akin to flying a housebrick.

From yesterday's New York Times if anybody is interested.... Very Happy

""With Hurricane Dean headed toward the Gulf of Mexico, the space shuttle Endeavour undocks from the International Space Station today, a day early, and is scheduled to land Tuesday.

The worry is that the hurricane may threaten Houston, site of mission control, the Johnson Space Center. In that case, NASA would transfer flight operations to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where the shuttle is scheduled to land. Moving the landing day forward to Tuesday should preclude that possibility.

Hurricane Dean was expected to pass south of Houston, with landfall in northern Mexico, but mission managers decided to take precautions in case the storm takes a right turn.

For the shuttle to land Tuesday, astronauts had to finish packing up and close the hatches to the space station last night. This required shortening a fourth spacewalk by the Endeavour’s astronauts yesterday to five hours from the planned six and a half.

If the storm is approaching Houston, flight controllers will land the Endeavour at one of three sites on Tuesday — either at the Kennedy center or at backup sites in California and New Mexico. If it is not approaching Houston, and weather does not permit landing in Florida, controllers will have the shuttle stay in orbit another day before considering backup sites.

The Endeavour has enough supplies to stay in orbit until Friday, but barring a major mechanical problem, it will land no later than Thursday.""
