Tomorrow's Rajar audience figures will shed more light on the migration from analogue to digital radio.
The data for the second quarter of 2007 will, for the first time, include details not just of what people are listening to but how they are listening to it.
Stations will be able to break down their audience figures into those listening via analogue, digital audio broadcasting, digital television and the internet.
However, Rajar is leaving it up to individual stations whether they publish the more detailed platform information.
The new statistics will reveal just how rapidly the audience is moving from traditional forms of radio listening via FM, AM and long wave, to the various new digital forms of distribution.

Radio audience figures announced - RAJAR Quarter 2, 2007
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Aug. 15, 2007) -
STRICTLY EMBARGOED UNTIL 07.00 HOURS, AUGUST 16, 2007
- Radio listening rises to 45.6 million listeners per week
- Listening via platform announced for first time
- Increase in radio listening via mobile phone
- Listening to podcasts via mp3 player up 40%
Radio listening has increased quarter on quarter to 45.6 million people, or 91% of the UK population(ii), up by almost 600,000 listeners on Q1, 2007, it was revealed today (August 16, 2007) when UK radio audience quarterly data was released by RAJAR Ltd (Radio Joint Audience Research).
Radio listening via platform (analogue and digital), announced for the first time since the introduction of new methodology in January 2007, reveals 12.8% of listening is now via a digital platform (DAB, DTV, Internet) with digital listening hours for Q2, 2007 totalling 136 million hours per week. Overall listening to digital only services is growing quickly, from 905,000 listeners in Q2, 2003 to 6.09 million in Q2, 2007 and during an average week 26.2% of the population (adults 15+) now listen to radio via a digital platform.
Radio listening via mobile phone: RAJAR research released today also reveals that the number of mobile phone owners (aged 15+) who claim to have listened to the radio via a mobile phone has risen 27% year on year (7.0% in Q2, 2006) to 8.9%. In addition, over a quarter of 15-24-year-old mobile phone owners (1.8 million) say they have listened to the radio in this way, a rise of 25% year on year. (21.7% in Q2, 2006 vs 27.2% in Q2, 2007).
Listening to podcasts via an mp3 player: A year after data on listening to podcasts via an mp3 player was released for the first time, RAJAR research, this quarter, shows that 2.7 million adults (18.3% of mp3 player owners) now report that they have used their mp3 player to listen to podcasts. This is a significant rise of 40%, from 1.9 million in Q2, 2006.
Detailed data and individual radio station data, for both BBC and Commercial Radio stations, is available on the RAJAR web site at www.rajar.co.uk.
(ii) This weekly reach figure is the number of people (adults 15+) in the UK who listened to a radio station for at least five minutes in the course of an average week during the quarter.

So Radio 2 is down a bit in total listenership. From 13.252m in Q1 to 13.117m in Q2 (although they changed the methodology in Q2). Thats a drop of 135,000 or -1%.
Wogan is holding steady going from 7.882m to 7.920m listeners.
So presumably it could be either the impact of the Sunday night schedule changes and people giving up on Radio 2 completely, thus decreasing its overall reach and/or other parts of daytime may have dropped listeners.

Around six million people are listening to the radio digitally - a massive rise since 2003, new figures have revealed.
Twelve per cent of listeners tune in regularly using digital radio, TV and the internet, while 25% of regular analogue users have also tried digital.
In 2003, only 900,000 people were regular digital listeners, according to radio industry analysts Rajar.
BBC Radio 1's Chris Moyles added 200,000 new listeners to his breakfast show over the past three months.

The Jazz is proving to be a very useful alternative when Radio 2 is unbearable. Unfortunately, that is becoming more and more of a regular happening. I foresee a surge in The Jazz audience figs at 9.30 Next week!

I'd like to have known the listening figures for the 6 day Pirate broadcasts, I reckon it would have shook the likes of Ms Douglas and maybe some so called presenters!

The BBC's local radio stations covering Lancashire, Manchester and Merseyside lost a total of 56,000 listeners in the three months to the end of June compared with the previous quarter. At Radio Manchester, 83,000 listeners have switched off over the last 12 months. It's a different story in the south of England - with some of the better gains for BBC local radio.
BBC Radio Bristol added 31,000 listeners per week and saw its total hours rise by more than half a million quarter-on-quarter. The station's weekly audience of 248k is the highest in two years.
Tim Pemberton, Managing Editor of BBC Radio Bristol, says: "I'm really pleased that the station changes are beginning to have a positive impact. Not only are we attracting thousands of new listeners, they are staying with us for longer. It's a credit to the hard work of all the team here that our audience figures are up"
Radio Cambridgeshire's new enlarged TSA brought them an extra 20,000 listeners this quarter (% reach stayed the same). BBC Cambs also posted its best market share figures in 18 months.
At BBC Radio Cornwall they'll be partying on the beach in the August sunshine after adding 29,000 listeners this survey and seeing their market share rise to 24.4%.
In the North, Radio Manchester's neighbours in Blackburn and Liverpool might not be popping the champagne corks either today. Radio Lancashire lost 15,000 weekly listeners and saw a drop in hours as well. The station's now got its worst market share in many years (8.2%). Radio Merseyside's hours and share are up, but that won't make up for the 24,000 drop in the size of their audience.
Maybe it's a northern thing (the weather to blame perhaps?)... BBC Radio Newcastle lost 38,000 listeners quarter-on-quarter as well.
There's a mixed book for the BBC Nations with Radio Ulster getting its best reach for a few years. They added a whopping 82,000 listeners in Q2/07 compared with Q1/07. Radio Wales lost 46,000 from its audience though, and BBC Radio Scotland did worst off of the three - losing 146,000 from their reach (dropping from 25% to 21%). That sees them drop below the million listeners per week level again.

| I think Mark M is right. A lot is written about London Stations. I suppose a lot of this depends on the share holders, and how the other small sister stations cope if these bigger networks don't do well? |

Hmmm. Radio Lancashire have been going from strength to strength lately so that's a bit of a surprise (although breakfast host Tony Livesey was off for much of this Quarter). 15,000 is probably within the margin of error, but I'm sure things will pick up with the start of the football season.
Either that or they've lost listeners to Chorley FM! |

Chris Evans had 4.85 million listeners to Drivetime in Q2. That is more or less the same as Q1 which IIRC was 4.81m so somewhere he had added 40,000 listeners.

Just think - every time he downloads his own podcast that adds another statistic to the total. Mind you, his bandwidth charges must be huge after downloading 40,000 times! |

Thats the one!
The problem with the All Request Friday is that it seems to get a bit tired as a format after a year and a half on the air. Where as Chris has changed the format of the Mon-Thur shows several times, the Friday show remains the same. All this upbeat, "we are all off for the weekend hiking/surfing/ on a killing spree/ delete as appropriate" emails & texts can get to you after a while
