BBC Radio 1 have announced that Annie Nightingale's Request Show is being revived for one night only to mark the station's 40th anniversary.

The show, which went out on Sunday nights after the chart rundown, lasted for 12 years, even though it had only been planned for a three-month run.

Remembering the show on the Radio 1 website, Nightingale said she thought it had become "quite weird and quirky".

The two-hour show will be broadcast on 30 September.

'Broadcasting twist'

The programme first hit the airwaves in 1982, with Nightingale describing it as a "cult listen".

"From week one the requests came in by the sack load," said the 65-year-old.

Throughout the years, listeners used a variety of props to get their demands noticed - with requests submitted on a house brick, a paper prayer mat and the rubber end of a shower attachment.

"For me, getting so much mail - so many hilarious, poignant, witty, daring communications - was like Christmas every week," said Nightingale.

"I read every single one and I loved doing that."

Despite the request programme's popularity throughout the 1980s, Nightingale admits she had concerns it would eventually come to an end.

"I was in constant fear that, having found a unique broadcasting twist, the show would get taken off.

"We weren't mainstream, we didn't play much chart stuff, but somehow I had connected with a generation," she said.

Only two guests ever appeared on the show - John Lydon of the Sex Pistols and Shaun Ryder from the Happy Mondays.

Nightingale, who now presents a late-night dance music show on Radio 1, counts Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh and several Radiohead members amongst her fans.

Fans can send in their requests for the anniversary special via the Radio 1 website.

BBC Online.

I remember listening to the show after the chart. Playing the intro to the song and then saying "Hi" before they sang.

Fantastic news.

I remember tuning in to the original Annie Nightingale Request Show.

Must listen to Radio for sure.

Maybe they will bring this show as a permanent feature BUT for Radio 2 not Radio 1.

Pay attention Ms Douglas-such a bold move might just save your arse longer term.

I thought Nightingale said she never wanted to work on Radio 2. I think she is like John Peel. She can grow old and still broadcast on Radio 1

Well deserved. In days of yore, she and Jimmy Savile were the only R1 DJs whose programmes were a must for me.

I'd agree with Mark's comments re wanting the Request Show to come to R2, but as Ernie says, she is on record as saying she wouldn't want to work for the network. Pity.

And I remember the request on a housebrick. Can't remember what the request was for, though! Smile

If Annie does not want to work for radio 2, there is surely someone currently on air who could do a suitable job on our network.

The first person to mention all-request friday will be taken out, put against a wall and shot!

All request shows' were mentioned a lot on the old message boards. Then Mark Goodier when he was on the network did some request shows over the bank holidays, and then Chris Evans introduced one. They don't really work now as a lot of music you want to hear is played now and there is a lot of interaction on message boards and directly. When Annie presented the "request shows" on "radio one" they were all written in and prepared for the show. A interacted request show now would take up to much time and planning these days, and people would still moan they hadn't heard their songs, and certain presenters get to know us to well these days.

Will that be 'Geddon's Wall'?!! Shocked Laughing
They got rid one presenter who would have pulled off a request show, namely Ed Stewart.

I am, of course, prepared to rent out the last wall for such a purpose at a nominal amount, shall we say £10, or the still-beating heart of an Evans.

To answer Ernie's point, both instances of static are avoided in our house wherever possible.

Which is why it worked - it had an established format, none of this time-wasting with whoever is lucky enough to phone in, everything was done in advance. It was still an enjoyable show, with definite themes ("What do you call fans of Duran Duran?", 'sampling' other people's records, etc.) and was stuck in enough of a backwater slot to allow it to find its own way rather than have a 'populist' format.

I've thought about ringing up on CE's All-Request Friday for something fairly recent but which got limited airplay (my choice would be Gemma Hayes' "Hanging Around"), but wonder whether I would be selected even if I did get through to the researcher who fields the calls beforehand. Would they have access to her 2003 album "Night On My Side" at short notice? Would it be deemed suitable listening for Drivetime? Maybe I would be better off asking for Derek and the Dominoes' "Layla" or The Human League's "Don't You Want Me?"?

I can't help thinking that only the people who want something from a reasonably narrow selection of available albums would be picked to appear on Drivetime. Am I wrong in this assumption?

I managed to get Pat Benatar's 'All Fired Up' played as a 'Gobsmacker' at the beginning of the year. By the way, it was while Evans was away and Mark Goodier was sitting in.

Maybe it's only Bob who pulls stuff from (admittedly his own collection of) albums. Confused

The 'Lester's Library' tracks are Alex Lester's own choice. Well two of them are, the third 'Library' track is picked by a listener. There's one each hour of his show.
