Armed Forces personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan will receive council tax rebates, Defence Secretary Des Browne has announced.
Troops who pay council tax for a UK property will receive a £140 tax-free rebate for their six-month tour. It will be introduced from next month with first payments made on April 1, 2008.
Those in single living accommodation do not pay any accommodation charges, including council tax while deployed on operations.
Mr Browne said: "I am delighted to announce a further enhancement to the operational welfare package.
"Armed Forces personnel who pay council tax and who deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan will be entitled to a tax-free payment of £140.
"This payment is designed to offset around 25 per cent of their council tax payments whilst they are on operations."
He added: "It underlines the Government's commitment to support our Armed Forces and their families. We intend to extend this payment to all those deployed overseas on operations next year."
The rebate will be added to the tax-free £2,320 Operational Allowance which is paid to servicemen and women at the end of a six-month tour in Afghanistan or Iraq.
Mr Browne also announced an extra £80 million funding to improve Army housing which will pay for a further 1,350 new en-suite bed spaces to be built under a £1.4 billion project, known as Slam (single living accommodation modernisation).
By 2013, around 50,000 single living bed places will be built or improved. The scheme has already delivered more than 9,000 new bed spaces.
The extra £80 million has been raised from selling Army assets including RAF Coltishall, West Rainham and Connaught Barracks in Dover.
The money will be spent over the next three financial years, beginning with £20 million in 2008-09, £40 million in 2009-10 and the final £20 million in 2010-11.
