Paul Gambaccini is to return to Classic FM to present a landmark series about his classical music heroes.
Gambaccini, who was one of the station's original line-up when it launched in 1992 and currently hosts America's Greatest Hits on BBC Radio 2, will front a 12-part series, Paul Gambaccini's Hall of Heroes.
The Sunday afternoon series will begin on November 4 and will feature the likes of Luciano Pavarotti, Bryn Terfel, Anne-Sofie von Otter and the Kronos Quartet.
"It was an honour for me to be part of the original Classic FM team. I was thrilled to be able to have a long run with what was a new idea for classical music radio, the Classic Countdown," said Gambaccini.
"Now I am delighted to write and present another new show, Paul Gambaccini's Hall of Heroes, a series of personal appreciations of artists and composers who have touched me the most." _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I'm not a hugh fan of Gambo, but at least he's several cuts above the usual 'name' presenters on Classic FM (Stephen Fry and Tony Robinson excepted). Simon Bates and David Mellor are possibly the most irritating and ill-suited presenters on any national music station. |

The station is struggling although Simon Bates does say his show is the nations most listened too. Myleene Klass is returning after giving birth. |

Ian,
I like David Mellor's show, but the Tony Robinson show that was recently on CFM was absolute trash in my opinion, too over-produced and too distracting from the subject of music. |

Well, I found Robinson's voice and storytelling to be absorbing. I wasn't really listening for the music, though.
Mellor, on the other, hand has a grating voice that goes right through me. He plays a lovely piece of music then bursts in as the final notes fade and screeches like a Dalek on Sunny D. It's unbearable.
And he shares an inflated sense of self-importance with Bates, whose pompous know-all voice intrudes across the network at all times with a repulsive humour-free arrogance.
In short, I'd listen to Classic FM much more if neither of these buffoons were on there |
