| I used to have a pair of those things when I did mobiles back when dinosaurs roamed the earth ! Happy days, bloody great Citronic Kennet deck unit with a right dodgy tape deck between the turntables and the two sonifex machines sat on a home made 'bridge' we built over the back of the console... happy days. | What a fun idea! I love the way the cartridges clonk when they go in the machine and the fact that if you stop a cart midway and take it out of the machine it will still be where you stopped it next time you try to use it. Just like the real thing. Very clever. |

The old-style tape carts used 1/4" tape loops that reset if you went to remove them - at least the ones that I used (and had to record) did! Sometimes they would chew up completely as you removed them, too. Great fun. 
Then there were the three-machine stacks where one finishing cart would trigger the next (common for commercials playout). So the presenter would run out of the studio only to dash back because the second or third machine hasn't fired. |

In many ways the old Sonifex carts were just as reliable as the server-based playout used today. At least you could see the cart in the machine right in front of you, and if it didn't fire you could thump it! With so much stuff now stored on network playout server systems, you don't really know where it is or what it's doing. And when the screen in front of locks up you're completely knackered - as (I think) Ken Bruce discovered recently and had to move studios during a programme.
If you look at the R2 (and R1) studio webcams these days you'll see that there's hardly any hardware for the presenter to drive - a simple mixer, two or three computer screens and that's about it. And even then the people in the control room are riding levels, etc.
That's why I wonder why Ross needs Andy to drive the desk! What desk? |

Like Sarah Kennedy, perhaps? She admits not to being techie-minded but manages (somehow) to drive the desk herself. It's not rocket science these days.
Anyhow, that's not the point. The point is that anybody else could ride the desk - I don't see why Andy has to pollute the planet so heavily by flying backwards and forwards to Malaga every week just to make his relatively minor contribution. |
