Like in the old Soviet Union days, the election results have proably been already prepared. Laughing

Stupid idea. How can anybody ( apart from Mark M ) vote for one single person?
I've already voted for Frank Zappa but I wasn't happy about it.....

My vote was slightly tongue in cheek.

If I had to vote seriously then my vote would go to Nelson Mandela.

I simply can't come up with one final choice so I shan't be voting.

Ian.

A slightly bizarre final list - Lara Croft, Donny Osmond and Nelson Mandela! And John Lennon gets in twice (once is quite enough, thank you).

From what I understand via Steve Wright.... the idea is to vote for the person you think has influenced the last 40 years. Is that possible?
J F Kennedy maybe. John Lennon - never.

The only thing SW has influenced me to do over the last few years is to turn the radio off/over to another channel when he comes on....

One can't help thinking that the R2 listeners didn't really take the thing seriously......

I think TW would come top in any vote hosted by R2.... best dressed man, worst dressed man, who would you invite to lunch, who would you give your last Rollo to etc etc....

on the upside though, he was available to give an acceptance speech....

Good old Terry Very Happy

The acceptance speeches for the others would have been interesting.

Good to see the accolade is not going to his head & that he is content in his new job as continuity announcer.

Yes, Wogan was the perfect winner as he clearly takes it as seriously as those who voted for him. Laughing

I'm not the slightest bit surprised that Terry got the award.

Those who were voting had, by definition, to be Radio 2 fans. Wogan's at his best on the radio and he's popular. He's been around ages, long enough to have influenced Radio 2's output for its entire life.

It's not unreasonable to say that he's an iconic broadcaster, certainly in the context of Radio 2.

Oh, and even if the majority of voters went for the "serious" options, their votes were split three ways.

Actually, I don't think this was the result the BBC management were expecting. Or even wanted, for that matter. They'll pretty much have to give Wogan whatever money he wants when his contract comes up for renewal!

I hope this has the senior Radio 2 management a little embarassed, actually. I find these sorts of polls faintly patronising. They mean nothing and, with the participants being self selecting from a biased sample of the population, the results can be dangerously misleading. And yet they're built up beyond all reason.

I mean, if Nelson Mandella had won, how much would a radio poll in the UK have really meant to him?

I bet the BBC were hoping for a "serious" result they could publicise as meaningful in programmes like Panorama. Instead, the listeners have taken control, told the bosses they like people who grew up in radio AND have stopped the BBC being pretentious about their polls. Well, this one anyway. Brilliant.

Oh, and we get a hilarious breakfast show out of it, as Wogan takes the preverbial out of the whole thing. Excellent stuff!!

No other result would have felt so good. Very Happy

Rob.
