A guesthouse owner was named the world's best porridge maker after a tense cook-off in Scotland today.

Maria Soep, from Argyll, Scotland won the 14th annual World Porridge Making Championships in the Scottish Highlands.

A dozen cooks gathered in Carrbridge to see who could make the finest bowl of the
oatmeal dish and take the coveted Golden Spurtle Award.

The title of World Porridge Making Champion is awarded to the contender deemed to have made the best traditional porridge using oatmeal and salt.
Judges marked the entrants on their porridge's appearance, consistency and taste.

Maria Soep runs a luxury guesthouse in Kilchrenan and has been involved in the hotel and catering trade since she was 15.

She said the secret of her success was using traditional organically grown pinhead oatmeal bought in a health food shop in Oban on Scotland's west coast.

The judges commended the dish for its nutty texture.

In the speciality porridge category, Al Beaton from Inverness was named the 2007 champion.

His winning concoction featured porridge with stewed apple, cinnamon, raisins, whipped cream, chocolate and grape nuts.

Here's the fulll report, if anyone is interested - http://www.goldenspurtle.com/home.htm

In a passage of insomnia at the weekend I heard Pete Mitchell try to interview one of the judges, George McIvor, chairman of the Master Chefs of Great Britain, on the telephone. To say he was condescending and really not very interested wouldn't be stretching things, but Mr McIvor kept his cool and humour. Alas we didn't get to learn how to make the stuff properly - the English half of my parentage shines through at this point, because the only porridge I like is the golden syrup flavoured instant variety you zap in the microwave.
