Yes, I heard him brilliantly and smoothly link from Wogan to Buggles! I'll catch the rest on Listen Again.

Who else would give you a Queen track almost straight after an Eric Coates piece?

Was singing along to the Teddy Bears' Picnic!

Hearing Caryl Gibbons' On the Air reminded me that this was the theme of an eponymously titled quiz on R2 in the 80s. With all the recent interest in nostalgia, is the time ripe for a revival?

I too hope that DC will part of the radio scene for a while yet, for only Brian Matthew and perhaps David Jacobs is anything like his equal in catering for those of us of a certain age.

So Was I Ian!

I thought the name On The Air meant something other than the tune, but wasn't sure. I don't think I ever heard the programme but have heard of it.

Missed the show tonight (footie, we won 3-1) but I will do a Listen Again later.

Let me fill you in on the tune On The Air, written by Carroll Gibbons, an American pianist/bandleader who settled in Britain and led the swankiest band in London town.

Carroll Gibbons was dance band leader at the Savoy Hotel from 1931 till I think 1951. Fantastic rhythm pianist, very distinctive style. The band were top notch, featuring at times George Melachrino, Hugo Rignold, Paul Fenhoulhet, names light music fans may know.

The band version of On The Air was recorded 27 October 1932, singer was Harry Bentley.

At that time the BBC were broadcasting from a top London hotel LIVE almost every night, hence On The Air.

Missed the show too as I had to do something at work.
Finally getting a laptop this week (usually use PS3/Wii) so will be able to use listen again at last.
Can anyone tell me how long each show is available for and can you save them to hard drive or cd?
I often wish I'd recorded Desmonds shows as I think he represents what good Radio is about- a warm knowledgeable host with completely varied musical choices.
And I don't think he just appeals to people of a certain age, I think he appeals to people who love music and aren't narrow minded (ie not the Radio 2 playlisters.)

Shows stay on for 7 days. You can record to your hard drive using programs such as Audacity (free) or Total Recorder (one off payment) which I use, as recommended a few years back by another member of the R2 boards.

Good luck with your laptop!

What, you expect correct spelling as well as wisdom and erudition?

But seriously, thanks for the info on Carroll Gibbons.

And I recommend capturing the Windows Media live stream rather than the horrid Real Player one, too. It's more stable and better quality (as low bit-rate streams go, anyhow).

How do you go about recording the "Listen Again" programmes, please? I have both Audacity and Windows Media Player available...

Thanks in advance,
Rob.

I'm not sure how Audacity works but if you go to the help part it will tell you.

You often need to check the Sound properties box in Windows System folder and make sure that the mixer panel is set to Wave OUt Mix in order to be able to record what's going through the sound card. With Audacity open, chech the Input dropdown in order to make sure you're switched and if it's OK you'll see you're getting input levels on the level meter. If you are, all you have to do is to click the Red Record button to see a waveform then writing along the blank tracks. That's your sound being recorded.

Make sure that the level doesn't hit the Red area too strongly - while you can get away with this Ok in analogue recording it's a no-no with digital because you'll get instant distortion. Make a few test recordings first!

When it comes to editing, switch to Playback and then trim, cut, change levels, etc., as you wish.

It's difficult trying to give a training course in this context, but it really is pretty easy for non-pros to learn and the help files are good.

I'm doing this without the benefoit of my Windows machine up and running - I normally use Apple Macs for video and audio work, so I'm describing it all "blind" at the moment!

gaz,

fred has described it ok, though on my PC I usually select the source for incoming sound using Windows Sound Recorder>Edit> Audio properties, that may not be the easist way Confused but it has choices like Line In and Microphone which I also use.

If you want Stereo there is a box in Audacity that needs ticking, and if you want wav files for a playable CD you need to record at bitrate 44100.

The theme for tomorrow's programme is Out and Proud, according to the Radio Times. What can they mean?

And Noel Coward, Elton John and others?

Could actually make a good selection.

There would certainly be plenty to choose from.

Apart from George Melly and also that haunting song about the sad young men, I found the actual musical selection representing Out and Proud just a little disappointing.

Meant to add-did Shirley Bassey also record the sad young men song?
