Watching Prime Minister's Question Time on the News, I was struck by the catcalling, use of childish invective etc that passes for debate in the Commons.

If anyone behaved like that at almost any other professional meeting, they'd be slung out.

Yet our legislators do it and it seems to be accepted as normal behaviour.

Ian.

Brown and Cameron said 'they wouldn't behave like this. " Don't Believe any of them"

Very Happy

Yes but politics is adversarial. It always has been. The alternative is fighting in the streets.

Business meetings generally are unproductive time wasting sessions when people dont say what they really think. The last thing we want to encourage is more PC mealy mouthed cliche spouting speech. It is already a disease that is infecting the country.

PMQ's are pure theatre. A time to score points and try to make your opponent look stupid. Granted webcameron needs no help at all, but it is the longest running knockabout comedy in the world.

...or , indeed, in Parliament itself, as has been known to happen in not a few countries abroad.

I think we may have to get used to this, because David Cameron likes playing to the gallery (it's one of the few things he does well) and Gordon Brown, lacking his predecessor's readiness with the charm and soundbite, is going to be an easy target.

It is an unedifying spectacle, but I suppose it's a bit of light relief amongst the drudgery of normal business inside the House and bad news outside it.

It is always good to remember that the distance between the 2 front benches, and the red line in front of them, is just longer than the length of a good sword and arm.

Are people really such shrinking violets that they cant cope with some argy bargy in parliament?

Cameron & Campbell have every right to be annoyed with Brown for doing a smash & grab raid on their policies. He nicked the airplane tax idea (as opposed to taxing passengers), the inheritance tax reform, the non-dom tax and will probably steal their stamp duty ideas as well.

I remember when Michael Heseltine swung the mace at the Labour front bench in the late 1970's. Six speakers have been beheaded by parliament as well in prior centuries. So things are quite tame these days.

The point that I was trying to make is that name-calling and same to you with knobs on are scarcely a good substitute for reasoned debate.

If you put ideas out on display - you can expect them to be (Allegedly) stolen. Is this not an example of Gordie wanting the best Ideas no matter where they came from?

That's one way to look at it. I suppose after 10 years he is tired of coming up with his own ideas. That's a catchy election slogan "Gordon's tired. Give him a rest" Laughing

Brown said he wouldn't be doing that when he took over as PM. Typical Hypocrite...

I like it when MP Dennis Skinner keeps standing up but never gets called to ask a question. Laughing
